I'm undecided on whether I liked this one as much as the last, but I don't think I did.]

I was still caught up in the story and everything but it didn't go where I expected it to and now I can't help wondering what the end game of the series will be. Who is she going to end up with in the end?

I'll be waiting a bit impatiently for the third book in the series.

My one thought right now is: why didnt I fetch the last book with me on holiday?!?

I sped through this so easily and quickly got dragged back into the series despite it being 2 and a half years since I read the first one.

Unfortunately I'm going to have to wait another four or five days till I'm back home to finish the series now and see how everything plays out with Penryn, Raffe, Paige and their crazy mum.

This is the first novella I've read in this series and I liked that despite how short it is that we still got to see Gin kicking arse.

Mab's funeral takes place in this and you'd expect it to be a rather sedate affair, right? WRONG! Two attacks in such a short story and seeing it all happen from three different viewpoints was an interesting angle for it to happen.

I'm expecting good things from the next book in the series now.

As mentioned in my review of the third book in this series, its been a long time between books 1 and 2 and books 3 and 4 and my tastes have changed/improved in the years between.

I'm sure if I'd have read these books in the 90's I would have loved them but the series is almost older than me (26) so terms like vampiress seem really outdated.

Nevertheless, I do like that everyone got what they wanted in the end.

How Did the Corpse Get Into Emmy's Shop?
Emmy Adler has just moved into the apartment above her kite shop. That's why she hears the scream when Stella, her part time employee, goes to open the store that morning. Stella has found a dead body in the middle of the shop's floor. Neither of the women recognize the victim, and the police aren't certain who she was either. Who could the victim be? Why was she in Emmy's locked shop in the middle of the night? And who killed her?

There are some fun twists to this mystery early on, but the pacing does lag a time or two before Emmy figures everything out. Once she does, we are in for a wonderful climax. I missed one or two of the series characters, but others were there to step in and keep us entertained. Naturally, the book has plenty of new characters, and they were well developed, making them good suspects in the case. One of the returning characters in this book does spoil some events from the previous book. I loved seeing this character again, but you might want to read book two in the series before you pick this one up. Unlike the first two in the series, this one is coming out as an ebook only, but fans of the series will be thrilled to see these characters again.

A great start to the series
THE CRUEL PRINCE was a great start to this series and it holds so much promise in terms of future book potential. The strengths of this series lie in the meeting of mortal and faerie worlds and the mixing of mortal and faerie beings, with hierarchy and prejudice being prominent. The book is full of strong characters to like, love, dislike and hate. Each character was developed so well, even some of the lesser characters. However, there are many lead characters and this exemplifies Holly Black’s talent.

Jude, the female main character was a strong young women who had had a life of hardship, trauma, bullying and adversity. She went through a coming of age that was forced on her during this read and she was just fantastic to focus on. The family relationships were complex and fascinating; the potential romantic relationships were unexpected and intriguing.

I listened to this on audio and I have to admit to feeling a lack of focus mid-way, where it either lost pace or the audio wasn’t working for me. The narration was good however. I can see myself flipping to the book a re-read before book two and continuing in this format.

I am truly excited at the continuation of the series and the final 15% was thrilling. Most YA fantasy fans will roll around in the muddy hype on this one, feeling satisfied.

Sets the Stage Well for a Climactic Battle
Fort Fitzgerald is home for the first time in months, separated from all the new friends he’s made. He, Rachel, and Jia have one year to re-find Excalibur and train to fight the Timeless One. Meanwhile, Fort also has a baby dragon he not only has to try to hide from his guardians but also from someone who has been sent to find it.

That’s all I am going to tease for fear of spoiling something from this book or previous books. Don’t start here if you are new to the series since there will be spoilers for some of the twists from earlier books in this one. But fans of the series will enjoy it. I found the post-apocalyptic feeling I had reading the previous book wasn’t as strong in this one. The story is engaging with twists and turns, but there was more humor, with I enjoyed. The characters are as sharp as ever, although Fort spends a bit more time here away from the other series regulars. This book walks the fine line between setting up the next (and final in the series) without leaving us disappointed in this part of the saga, and it does it perfectly. There is definitely a climax to this book, but the cliffhangers will leave other fans as anxious as I am to find out what happens to Fort next.
