"A story about compassion and forgiveness set in a World War II Japanese prison camp, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence seems to improve with age and repeated viewings. The screenplay, by Nagisa Oshima and Paul Mayersberg, based on a book by Laurens van der Post, is oblique, brutal, poignant. Tom Conti, David Bowie, and Takeshi Kitano all give first-rate performances, and Ryuichi Sakamoto’s score is heartbreaking. The last five minutes never fail to destroy me"

"My father in law, Victor Levenstein, just finished writing his own memoirs about his early life and surviving torture and forced labor in the Gulags. He met Solzhenitsyn while in exile and was in the same camp that is described in “A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich”. I found this book to be deeply profound in observing humans at their absolute worst while never missing the big story of human nature."

"Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is just a brilliant piece of work. It’s camp, it’s crazy, it’s out there, it’s not cerebral at all, it’s just visionary and against the grain. For me it’s just these female superheroes, and it’s using all the clichés but actually pushing them forward. Every time I think of something daring, I think of this film in particular, and it’s so inspiring whenever I want to do something pop."
