When Maurice Sendak passed away, I thought it would be only appropriate to review what arguably, is his best children's book. "Where the Wild Things Are" captured the hearts of so many people - both young and old. It is so much loved that they had to make a movie out of it (unfortunately). This book has it all!! A story line that kept me on the edge of my seat. Characters that come to life right in front of you and the perfect combination of mystery and suspense. This is an all around fantastic read and you won't want to put it down!

{I received an eARC via NetGalley from MacMillian Children's Publishing Group. I made no guarantee of a favorable review and the opinions expressed here are unbiased and my own.}

Loved this book! It was a quick entertaining read that didn't involve much thinking on my part...never a bad thing after work. My 4th graders are reading it in Book Club & have been devouring it too. The narrator is an awesome character that kids seem to relate well to. But he is also able to hold an adult's interest too. Not always an easy feat for a children's book. This is by far my favorite of Dahl's books!!

The fact that Kermode and Mayo have been working together for years clearly shows, and the chemistry between them produces some natural-feeling, funny banter and plenty of in-jokes.

Kermode gives fair reviews, not being patronising about children's films and admitting when he has wrongly assumed a film will be bad.

Due to circumstances I am not a regular cinema-goer, but I listen regularly to the Wittertainment podcast just for the chuckles it gives.

A very good animated film about a house that is actually a living monster! It has a different type of animation style to most, no cute characters and bright colours here, which is in keeping with the story. It's still well animated with a good sense of depth adding a feeling of 3D space in the film. It's a little slow to start but soon picks up. It's a mix of a children's adventure with a Twilight zone story.

I hate the green colour of the app. I wish I could change it, I just don't think there is a way (1 more)
It has made it easier for my family to keep in contact with me. A constant stream of children's pictures are what await me every morning
It has served me well for many a moon

The part of the film that made me cry. I don't want to cry in front of my kids. (0 more)
Worth the hype
A lot of people said this was great but I get dubious of hype but this lives up to it. With animation like the illustrations from a children's book, Klaus is a touching, heartwarming and even sometimes magically sad story. This is quickly going to become a firm Christmas favorite.

Creepy but cute and oh so Gaiman
I just always love Gaiman's children's books because even though they are meant for kids adults can also easily enjoy them and I really think it's because he does not simplify the stories.

I really wish I would have been able to read The Wolves In The Walls when I was a kid because I know I would have just loved it! The story is weird and cute but also creepy with very unique art.

Erika (17788 KP) rated Hook (1991) in Movies

Hook (1991)
1991 | Action, Family, Sci-Fi
Peter Pan is probably one of my two most favorite children's' books (the other being Winnie-the-Pooh). So, in the early 1990s, when this movie came out, I was so completely excited. One, you have Robin Williams, playing Peter. Two, you've got the Lost Boys, in all of the early 90s glory (Bangarang for life). Dustin Hoffman as Hook was so good, and the exchanges between Hook and Smee are some of my favorite in any movies. I still joke and say apostrophe instead of epiphany.
