The Golden Child (1986)
The Golden Child (1986)
1986 | Action, Adventure, Comedy
Well, that hasn't aged very well.

Mid 80s Eddie Murphy vehicle, with Eddie playing the part of an investigator who specialises in finding lost children and who is hired to find the mystical 'Golden Child', who has been kidnapped from a remote Tibetan monastery and who is supposed to save mankind from themselves.

What follows is a strange blend of (mild) horror, oriental mysticism and crime movie as Murphy is in the case.

Definitely an 80s movie in soundtrack, attitude and fashion.

Liar Liar (1997)
Liar Liar (1997)
1997 | Comedy
Liar Liar pants on fire ...

Mid 90s Jim Carrey vehicle, in which he plays a sleazy lawyer who is forced to tell the truth for 24 hours after his son makes a birthday wish for the same, which magically becomes true.

Cue physical slapstick comedy and his own brand of gurning as he tries to fight a divorce case, knowing he is on the 'wrong side' (as it were) over who gets custody of the children.

That, and a saccharine sweet finale.

It's a terrible thing when children are abused. It's more terrible when they are abused by a family member. The worst is when that family member is a parent. The person you are supposed to trust the most with your life.
Jillian Mitchell was 7 years old when her step-father started to molest her. It was one of the happiest and saddest days of her life. The day her baby sister, Layla, was born.
The abuse continued for 5 years. Starting with touching and escalating to oral sex and naked pictures. Byron, her step-father told her that if she told anyone, they wouldn't believe her and that they would blame her. And that if she wasn't going to do it, then he would get her little sister(who is now 5) to do it.
Jillian lived with this secret and never told anyone, not even her closest friend. When an incident at school, leads Jillian to find out she is not the only one in this situation, she finds the courage to stand up to her step-father (who she thought of as her real father from the beginning) and get him out of her life for good!
This is a great book and helps us understand that effects that abuse can have on children and their life as adults. Everyone handles it differently and more need to know that it is alright to speak out about it. I believe that if more children were not afraid to tell the secret, then we would have a lot less abuse out there and the cycles of teenage pregnancy and suicide would decrease.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Lila and the Crow by Gabrielle Grimard is a beautiful story dealing with and sad and very
real issue. Lila arrives at her neScreen Shot 2016-06-21 at 9.04.55 PMw school with the hopes of making new friends; however, instead of being welcomed with open arms she is welcomed with a mean comment. It only takes that one comment to destroy her confidence.

The first day with the first comment was the start of ruining her confidence. The comment came from one student but there are other students who either stand by and allow the comments to come or join in laughing. Eventually, Lila decides not to let the differences defy her but to embrace the differences. This book will show children that there will be situations where other children will hurt of mock them but that they should stand up and not allow the situation to ruin their day, month or year.

This book will open the floor to have a discussion about bullying and how it should not happen and if it is, that you should help the person instead of joining in the bullying or being a bystander. Everyone is different and this book can teach children to embrace and accept the differences.

The illustrations are wonderful, they show such great emotion in the characters as well as creating a mood that fits the story. Lila and the Crow will be a great asset to any home, classroom or library.
