Taraji P. Henson is all but unrecognizable in her adaptation of a civil rights activist who's been drawn to the brink after a local school is damaged in a fire. The fire damage threatens to desegregate the schools as there aren't many options for the students, who are caught in the crossfire. What ensues is a mostly peaceful war of attrition that surprises everybody involved.
Stellar acting throughout. Based on fact. Definitely worth a watch. Without understanding our history, we are doomed to repeat it.

Made just as the western was going out of fashion as a genre, there's a strikingly elegiac quality to this film - it includes all the requisite action and violence, but also considers wider issues about what it means for people to try and live together. Brings real heart and soul to the slightly cartoony character Eastwood played for Sergio Leone. In some ways this is a very serious film, but it also works superbly as a piece of entertainment.

I loved the historical detail to the Civil War era. Ms. MacLaren chiseled the scenes well, and I felt like I was transported to the heart of the story, the center of the war. All the feelings that Josie, Gordon Snipp, felt, I felt. I loved the way Josie fought for what she felt was right.
Levi's sweet character....oh was he swoon worthy as the Chaplain of his company. I love the way his friendship with "Snipp" blossomed, and later, his love for a beautiful young woman. It was so fun watching them together.
This story of hope, longing, deception and forgiveness is beautifully created. It's 4 star worthy, and I will definitely recommend it to all! Ms. MacLaren brought to life the action of the war, the romance of two God-fearing characters and messages from God of understanding and trust. This is definitely a keeper on my shelf!
