Track

"My friend Leila Arab turned me on to them. I love their songs, especially Full Moon (Death Classic) and Guillotine. Intense rapping, lyrics and lush beats. It's all good. They stand out because they're visceral, but also the global, fresh mix of a black English guy and a white Cali drummer and punk and hip-hop. Mostly I don't listen to experimental rap but in between there are gems, the same with all music genres."

"In one of the most indelible scenes of the early French New Wave, Jeanne Moreau searches for her lover in rain-swept Paris streets, accompanied by the only film score that Miles Davis ever composed. Her iconic suit was designed by Chanel, as were her dresses in another 1958 Louis Malle classic, The Lovers. The actress and designer saw each other often, loving to share anecdotes and book recommendations in Chanel’s personal library."

"I like a lot of older movies, too. I’m a big Peter Sellers fan. So I love — The Party is one of my favorite damn movies of all time. [If] you’ve never seen The Party, man, thank me later, man. Thank me later. When I tell you this movie is fabulous, man — it’s classic Peter Sellers, man. I love Peter Sellers so much. He’s one of my favorite actors of all time."

"A classic, and I grew up loving Judy Garland, and Bert Lahr is an amazing actor. As a child I watched it over and over again. It just represents the magic of moviemaking. I love how it goes from black-and-white to technicolor. My dad was a big Judy Garland fan growing up, so we would hear all these stories about her and the old studio system, so that’s one of my favorites."

"My all-time favorite film is unequivocally The Man Who Would Be King. I love the film. First of all, I love John Huston; I love Sean Connery; I love Michael Caine. I just think it’s one of the best examples of classic 1970s action adventure epics that I’ve ever seen and I don’t know how many times I’ve seen it, maybe a dozen times. It’s my favorite movie of all time."

"Many people in the West might not be aware of how much this collection means to younger women across the Middle East. Not only each particular story, and sub-story, but also the very storyteller behind, the great Shehrazad, is inspiring. The style is playful, the themes both universal and daring. Forget the sugar-coated Disney version; there is a core inside this world classic that was, and still is, quite forward-looking."
