Fun simulation game
Many moons ago (1997) I used to love playing the PC simulation game called Theme Hospital made by Bullfrog, this game from Sega is very much a spiritual successor.
You design and operate hospitals with the aim to cure patients of a number of comical illnesses. Some of my favourites include Emperor Complex where patients wander around naked; Emperor’s New Clothes style, and need a psychiatrist to put them right and Pandemic the description of which is:
“What were you thinking? Look, we know things can get a little heated in the kitchen… but, frankly, if you’re putting a pan on your head you’re just doing cooking wrong. However, we accept that sometimes these things just happen. We won’t judge.”
To cure pandemic you need to build, one of many illness specific treatment rooms, the Extract-a-Pan. It’s the fun illnesses and graphics for them and their cures that keep this lighthearted.
You take control of various hospitals each with their own specific issues and as we are following the US healthcare model here the aim is frequently to make loads of money!! You control what rooms to build, staff to hire and research to complete providing lots of micromanagement opportunities.
Unlike Theme hospital in the age of DLC more hospitals and illnesses are becoming available as well as more ways to customise your hospitals. I still feel nostalgic for the original and maybe just because I’m older I found this a lot easier but still very enjoyable experience.

When Park first sees Eleanor get on the school bus, he cringes. Everything about her is wrong - her size, her hair, her clothes. He knows the other kids will pick on her immediately. But for some reason, he tells her to sit down next to him, despite knowing it will attract attention -- exactly what Park doesn't want. However, over time, Park and Eleanor forge an unlikely friendship-- attention be damned.
I feel like reviewing this book can't do it justice. This was a lovely, amazing, heartwarming, heartbreaking novel. Rowell does an unbelievable job of capturing adolescent love, relationships, and high school life. And not your typical YA cool kids, easy romance, where the protagonists "meet cute" and fall in love on Day 1. Park and Eleanor's friendship isn't easy, their relationship isn't easy: their lives aren't easy. Rowell portrays all of this beautifully, even if it's agonizing to read, without making it seem trite. Park and Eleanor are two of the most developed characters I've read about in ages. They leap off the pages, to the point where I wanted to adopt Eleanor and hug and befriend Park.
The book slowed a bit for me in the middle -- the creep of an adolescent relationship can be a bit rough -- but it's worth it. The ending is crushing, in many ways, and I would just about kill for a sequel, even though I can grudgingly probably admit it's best the way it ended. No matter what, a beautiful read-- so worth your time-- and one I'll be recommending to anyone I can find who hasn't read it yet.

Very short book 1 of 4
This first instalment in the Drakon book sees a mysterious figure, Da-Ren, appear at a monastery looking for salvation, and then follows his memories of his coming-of-age journey as a 12 year-old boy. Dragged from his bed in the orphans camp of his tribe and thrown into The Sieve - a 6 week long trial to weed out the weakest of the tribe, he and his fellow tribe members are forced to stand barely clothed in the freezing field - if they don't fall they get the luxury of clothes and meat; otherwise its porridge. The story flows really well and only seems to drag in a couple of chapters - quite a feat considering the daily drudge being described!
This first part is very short indeed and I can't help but wonder why. I think the overall page count of the full 4 "book" series is about 1500 - so cutting it in to 4 sections seems a little far. This book is about 250 pages. While it tells the full story of Da-Ren's time in the sieve and concludes with his final rating (the role he will perform for the tribe for the rest of his life) I think more of the present story (the monastery) could have been added on the end. A story featuring flashbacks should absolutely not finish in the flashback - showing that this is not really a standalone book at all.
I will read the rest of the series in due course as I loved the storytelling, the world built and am intrigued as to what is next.

Meh
When college student Rebecca (Carla Gugino) brings her quirky dormmate Crawl (Pauly Shore) home for the holidays, she pretends they are engaged to thwart further advances from her high school sweetheart.

Son-In-Law does quite a few things wrong, but it succeeds from having a solid list of fun characters that make the story a little more enjoyable. Crawl is hilarious. His crazy antics freak the rest of the cast out, but he also has an endearing way of ultimately wearing on you. He changed a lot of hearts and minds throughout the course of the film, particularly Rebecca who started out as small-minded and uptight, but eventually came to delight in the joys of life. Crawl’s attitude was infectious and ultimately bettered the family.

I rarely give out 0’s unless there is nothing redeeming to add…and here you go. There is nothing special or particularly noteworthy about the way this film was shot. If given a little direction, a high schooler probably could have done the same job, if not better. Just lazy camera work. To say it was god-awful is an understatement.

When I was a kid, Pauly Shore could do no wrong in my eyes. I watch his films now as an adult and it’s nothing but cringeworthy. Son-In-Law isn’t the worst movie I’ve seen. In fact, a few tweaks might have made it a Folding Clothes movie. A handful of laughs wasn’t enough to stop the bleeding on my overall disappointment. Next.

Can Elvis Save the Wanted?
Elvis Cole thinks his current assignment will be easy. Single mother Devin Connor has hired him to find out where the money, clothes, and fancy watch that her teenage son, Tyson, have are coming from. She thinks that Tyson has started selling drugs, but it isn’t long before Elvis determines that Tyson is part of a trio that is robbing houses in the LA area. While Devin isn’t happy with the news, she’s preparing to deal with it, and Elvis thinks the assignment is over. However, that night Tyson disappears and a frantic Devin asks Elvis to find him. As Elvis once again begins to hunt for the teen, he discovers that someone else is after the teen and his friends, someone leaving dead bodies in their wake. Will Elvis be able to find Tyson in time?
This is yet another satisfying thrill ride from the pen of Robert Crais. The story starts strong and keeps us going until we reach the end. Unfortunately, it does have a few trademark Robert Crais issues, including Joe Pike acting a bit like a deus ex machina, although it isn’t as bad as in some books. Also, parts of the book rely on characters being too stupid to live (I was rooting for one to die, in fact). The characters could all be stronger, for example I couldn’t keep the main villains straight at all. But they are developed enough that I cared about the outcome. This is one of those books where it is easy to pick apart the flaws, but it is such a fun thrill ride that I’m glad I read it.

Probably the best Star Wars game so far
There are so many great aspects of this game, mainly, the amazing lightsaber combat. Any Star Wars fan will have hoped to live the fantasy of owning their own lightsaber, and this game is as close as it gets. The combinations of fighting styles, from lightsaber to various force powers, are incredible.
The customisation options in this game are also impressive. You can customise the colour of your ship, droid, clothes, and most importantly, your lightsaber. There are various options for the saber, from the colour and style of the handle, to the colour of the blade.
Another impressive aspect of the game is the quality and depth of the story. Set a few years after the events of Episode III, it follows a young jedi named Cal, who is on the run from the Inquisitors who are hunting down any remaining jedi. The game features flashbacks to a younger Cal in training, which helps the player to learn new force powers. One negative I found was that some of the early missions in the story seem to drag slightly. There seems to be a lot of climbing and jumping between ledges, without much of the impressive action that features later in the game.
However, this a small negative in a very impressive game, and the tempo of the story does pick up later on. Reaching an amazing final mission, which (no spoilers) in my opinion features one of the best video game cut scenes I've seen.
I would highly recommend this game.
