Scarlet Nexus
Scarlet Nexus
2020 | Action
The game starts with an interesting premise in the distant future and everyone has brain powers and advanced technology. People have abilities like electrokinesis the ability to control electricity. They can also send messages directly to each other's brains. The story has really cool sci-fi elements in it and you can play as either Kasane or Yuito, the two main protagonists. I went with Kasane and got to see how her story played out. You can do a new game plus playthrough with the other character and you get to see loose ends tied up from their perspective. Combat is fun and the story and characters are great. There's a lot of wild twists and reveals that add to the elements of the storytelling. There are references to global warming and time travel. Scarlet Nexus is really good overall and because it's done so well, it kept me playing until the end. Basically flawless!

While at first I was dubious after the teaser trailers showing what appeared to be more classic horror creatures, they pulled it off perfectly!

The gameplay, while mostly unchanged in style from RE7, is still superb fun, and gives us a slightly more open-world to explore compared to the previous Ethan Winters adventure, as well as a more traditional gothic feel.

The various characters and bosses are all very different and for the most part original, each having their own look, combat style and personality.

My only criticism is not with the game itself, but with advertising. Most people will have noticed that Lady Dimitrescu, the pale, 9ft tall queen of RE memes features more than almost anybody in posters. The thing is, she has a surprisingly small part in the game. Advertising would have you believe she is the main antagonist of the game, where in fact she is in fact the very first main boss. That is as much as I will tell you in that regard!

Altogether, an outstanding game!

Slow First Half Means the Thrills Are Rushed
Avery and Carter are approached about going to Antarctica to join an expedition already in progress. While the group is officially working on a way to rebuild the ice shelves to combat global warming, they are hoping to find a treasure that was rumored to be on board a ship that sank in the waters a century ago. Not only is the ship in freezing waters, but it’s likely deeper than either have dove before. Will they find the ship and recover the treasure?

I was hoping now that the main characters had formed a partnership, we would get a better paced second book. Sadly, things still took a bit too long to get going, leading to a rushed and stuffed second half. The characters are a bit flat with the focus being on the action. On the other hand, some of the action scenes are paging turning intense, and the Antarctica setting comes alive. I haven’t written off the series yet, but I hope the next is stronger.
