"You know what’s another film that I watch over and over again? Actually I just came up with two more films, both because I think they’re masterpieces of contemporary storytelling — non-linear storytelling. Casino, I think, is probably up there with Chinatown in the best screenplays ever written. I love the film itself, but if you look at the sophistication of that screenplay and how they effortlessly move between time periods and geographic locations with no problem whatsoever — and of course they use narration but still, I feel it’s a truly spectacular display of storytelling."

"I do remember talking with [filmmaker David] Fincher. He was telling me about the original one that [Michael Haneke] did, Funny Games, and I was telling him about Hidden. And we didn’t realize in that conversation that we were talking about the same filmmaker. But it is truly, for me, the God of cinema, that just does not breathe a step wrong, and is contemporary life apart from Kieslowski’s time — is Haneke. I looked at that film and I thought it the most thrillingly, chillingly, correctly timed movie that I have ever seen."

"Although any one of the recent godsend rush of Kurosawa releases could go in this slot. For years now this gem (and much of his filmography) has only been available for us poor Region 1 sods on crappy import discs, and though the broken English subtitles via a bad Chinese translation had a sometimes poetic dadaistic flair, it’s a relief to finally have a beautiful, intelligible disc of it. The film itself stands easily up to Stray Dog and High and Low as one of Kurosawa’s best contemporary crime dramas."

"Tide’s End explores the many faces of sexual assault and human trafficking, and how life can shatter for those most affected – the victims. Because #MeToo is more common than we can imagine. As is #ChildrenToo and even #BoysToo. It tears apart our families and neighbourhoods. And wherever there is suffering, there are guardians and helpers who still the relentless pounding to encourage Tide’s End."

2.5 stars.

It was quite short and sweet but I didn't really feel any connection to the story or the characters and I'm not sure why.

The writing was also a little too stilted/formal for me at times too, so I kept putting me kindle down to do something else and coming back to it after a while.

I'm also not really feeling many contemporary romances that aren't New Adult at the minute, so at a later time I might give this another read and my rating may change.

DNF @ 28%.

I'm not having much luck with contemporary reads lately, the last two being DNF's because they aren't interesting me at all. I struggled with this from the start and after hat bit where Michael was mentioned on the way to the airport, I just knew he knew something about it...so despite the book boring me I skipped ahead to see if I was right...and I was. It still didn't make me want to finish the book though.

Not in the mood for contemporaries right now, it would seem.
