Merissa (12934 KP) rated Accidentally Vacationed with an Incubus (Briar Coven, #2) in Books
Mar 21, 2025
ACCIDENTALLY VACATIONED WITH AN INCUBUS is the second book in the Briar Coven series, although the coven doesn't appear for most of the book.
Jen was sent to prison nine years ago for killing her parents and has never forgiven herself. Devlin has never been summoned and has given up, taking a vacation instead. With the help of a magical bedsheet, these two meet and realise they can help each other, falling in love along the way.
This was a great story that had more of a mystery than the first book, with red herrings thrown in too. I loved the connection between Jen and Devlin and how it played out naturally. Fated mates with a twist. And not only that but there is another magical house! I love Boo-dini just as much as House, and I definitely want my own.
A great addition to the series that will leave you wanting more. Definitely recommended by me.

Phil Leader (619 KP) rated Witch's Legacy (Supernatural Evolvement #0.5) in Books
Nov 28, 2019
The first book in a new series by outstanding young adult author Katrina Cope is something of a big deal. Both her previous series are particular favourites of both mine and my teenage children. Set in the same universe as her Afterlife series, this tells the story of an ancient feud between witches and shapeshifters.
Living in a coven with her mother, Della has to put on a front of cruelty to fit in with the other witches, especially when her mother makes one of her frequent disappearances. One day she accidentally discovers a terrible secret that means that she must go on the run, attempting to survive in a modern world she is unprepared for and with few allies. With the whole might of the coven on her trail she must adapt and find friends to survive.
Once again Cope proves why she is one of the best young adult authors out there. Although the members of the coven do perhaps veer to towards a cackling stereotype at times they do come across and dangerous, evil and threatening. The other characterisation is up to the usual high standard. Della is a very likeable - and sometimes fallible- protagonist and grows as a person throughout her experiences. The other people she meets are also carefully described and have their own distinct personalities and goals.
The plot perhaps isn't complex, dealing as it does with setting the basics for the series to come, but does have a couple of twists if not any major surprises. But the story is always interesting and engaging and the reader will definitely be siding with Della and holding their breath as things get tight.
I very much enjoyed this and so will the young adult audience. 5 stars even though I know very well that every book in the series will just get better and better and I have left myself nowhere to go. But that's been the case with both of Cope's other series.

Merissa (12934 KP) rated When You Burn Me (Enchanted Hearts #1) in Books
Jan 29, 2025
WHEN YOU BURN ME is the first book in the Enchanted Hearts series with Sienna and Damon leading the way.
Sienna is a light witch in a small but powerful coven, who is one of the last guardians of a key which keeps a powerful dark witch locked up. Damon is the half-breed son of the prisoner, who is only alive because the dark coven is saving him for his 'mother'. When she is free, she will take his power which will also kill him. Obviously, Damon's none too keen on her being freed.
This was a great story with plenty of side characters to help give it some flavour. One of my favourites was Morrigan, a sassy and sometimes grumpy light witch who can cause death by the simple touch of her hand. One of the characters I didn't like so much was Terra, Sienna's aunt. I kept waiting for her to grow on me but it never happened.
A good start to a new series that I definitely recommend, and I can't wait to see what happens next.

Merissa (12934 KP) rated Accidentally Summoned an Incubus (Briar Coven, #1) in Books
Mar 19, 2025
ACCIDENTALLY SUMMONED AN INCUBUS is the first book in the Briar Coven series. It deals with a serious subject but is also fun, sexy, and lighthearted.
Lex has refused to summon her incubus because she doesn't feel as though it's right. Lochran has waited for his summons but is close to giving up. So when Lex's magical house accidentally summons him, fun times are had.
There were so many parts of this that I enjoyed. Firstly, the not-so-nice part was handled well and in a manner fitting for the book. I can't say I was disappointed with how it ended either! Having Grandma as the head of the coven was a stroke of genius and I loved how she flipped between the two roles.
I hope that we see more of Billy and Jake too, but I'm guessing I will have to wait for that being as she is part of a pack. Maybe, maybe not?!
A great read with a multitude of brilliant characters, first and foremost being the House! I really wish I had one! Definitely recommended by me.

Merissa (12934 KP) rated Rising for Autumn (Philadelphia Coven Chronicles #3) in Books
Mar 21, 2018
Rising for Autumn (Philadelphia Coven Chronicles #3) by Katherine McIntyre
Rising for Autumn is my favourite book so far in the Philadelphia Coven Chronicles. We meet the woman behind the Ice Queen mask and it is Sam, the djinn, who is there to help with the unmasking - but only in private! After all, Alanna is the leader of the coven, and a heavy weight rests on her shoulders with every decision she makes. If everyone knew how these decisions cost her, their unwavering faith in her may change. The Order of the Serpent rears its ugly head again, in fact, Alanna is correct in saying it should be a hydra! Thrown together, Sam and Alanna realise neither is quite what the other one thought.
I loved the approach in this book. Alanna is a strong woman, and makes no bones or apologies for that. There are not many who are prepared to look for the woman though, and that made me quite sad as I felt how lonely she was. Sam has tried to live as normal a life as he can, being a djinn tied to a lamp. Alanna constantly surprises him, and he sees the weight she carries. These two end up leaning on each other, as well as brainstorming and verbal sparring!
An excellent story, wrapped up in a tidy bundle with no editing or grammatical errors that disrupted my reading flow. The characters come to life and jump off the page, making you feel their highs and lows. I also love the season in each book. Katherine McIntyre is exceptional at placing the season without it being overpowering. It's subtle, and yet there for the seeing. I absolutely loved this story, and can't wait to continue with the series, although I also don't want it to end. Definitely recommended by me.

Witch’s Curse (The Bone Coven Chronicles book 1)
By Jenna Wolfheart
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Wanted: Magically Armed and Dangerous.
Ever since my parents died in the demon war, I’ve paid my way through life by using magic to con people. It’s not right, but a girl’s gotta do what she can to survive.
Unfortunately, my latest con has left me smack dab in the middle of a murder scene. Now, a coven of angry mages thinks I’m the killer. In order to clear my name, I have to team up with an infuriatingly sexy warlock whose powers are far darker than he admits. Throw in a string of related murders and a vexed vampire clan, and I’m up to my eyeballs in danger.
But that's not even the worst of it. When I get too close to the real killer, he casts a life-threatening curse on my grandmother. Before, I just wanted to save my own butt, but now I’ll do whatever it takes to track him down—even if it means following him through monstrous dimensions.
Because I don’t play nice with magic. And when you mess with Grandma, you become #1 on my sh*t list.
Ok so it was good I’m struggling between a 3 & 4 star so I eventually decided on a 3! I liked the concept and structure of the supernatural and the storyline line was good but it didn’t wow me. I’m hoping as the series develops it will be more gripping. Also a new author for me so that’s a plus.

The Crimson Spell ( charmed book 3)
By F. Goldsborough and Constance M. Burge
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Prue, Piper, and Phoebe don't know that a coven of warlocks is hunting them. They don't know that one of the warlocks has entered their lives disguised as a friend. And they don't know the coven's mission-to drain them of their magical powers, even if it means destroying them to do it!
Now the Charmed Ones must figure out which of their friends is really their enemy. Because sometimes what you don't know-can kill you.
What’s not to love? A new story with the Halliwells I miss this series so much so these little books are great for a charmed fix.

Merissa (12934 KP) rated Waking for Winter (Philadelphia Coven Chronicles #4) in Books
Mar 21, 2018
Waking for Winter (Philadelphia Coven Chronicles #4) by Katherine McIntyre
Waking for Winter is the last book in the Philadelphia Coven Chronicles, and this time we meet up with Cami and Dante. Now, Cami is a character we've met throughout the series, whilst Dante is a fairly new one who popped up in Alanna and Sam's story. Interestingly enough, this couple is also the only one who had a previous relationship with each other, although Cami left for her own reasons. Cami is 'haunted' by her experiences at the hands of the Order of the Serpent, and you realise just how much as the story fills out. Dante will do anything to protect Cami. He still loves her, even though he still doesn't know why she left. In this climatic book, all the previous couples play a part, but the spotlight remains on Cami and Dante.
This has one helluva ending, that definitely leaves you wanting more but strangely satisfied with what you have. The usual high quality of writing flows through this book, a standard I now associate with Katherine McIntyre. Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed this book, my favourite of the series has to be Rising for Autumn. However, I would highly recommend you try this series for yourself, and then let me know which is your favourite! An epic ending to a great series that I thoroughly enjoyed. Absolutely recommended by me.
