A hard-headed look at a number of famous cryptids (legendary animals) from a palaeontologist (Prothero) and a 'professional skeptic' (Loxton), attempting to determine if cryptozoology really is a genuine science (Michael Sheard just writes the introduction). Also goes on to consider the further question - if people aren't actually seeing monsters, then why do they think they are?

Pretty much guaranteed to make your average Bigfoot hunter or Nessie spotter squeal in outrage, but the writers' main proposition - that the famous cryptids are essentially products of 20th century pop culture - is coherent and well-argued, if nothing else. Some of the chapters are a bit more accessible than others, and they do take a variety of approaches - the section on sea serpents mainly focuses on the cultural development of the idea of such a creature, while the one on the Congo dinosaur is a fierce critique of creationist attempts to hijack science. A thoughtful and persuasive book.

Weird or spooky history and folklore, sometimes cryptids
A well-researched show that gives facts and insights into everything from big foot to serial killers to Amityville horror. It goes all over the place, which I both like and dislike, but I always download it right when comes out. There are (melo)dramatic pauses, inferences about what people were feeling, and putting some reactions and stories into local and historic context. All presented in a soothing baritone. So, if that's what you're into, you'll love Lore.

Thought provoking and sometimes scary as hell!
I love this podcast. Paranormal investigators, Dave and Tim talk over all topics from ghost to aliens, cryptids and everything in between. Weekly they do a Supernatural News and Parashare episode that is one of the highlights of my podcast feed. Other episodes are very topic driven and guest driven. Make sure you give it at least 3 episodes to decide if you like it or not.

Thoroughly enjoyable podcast that covers all of my favourite subjects, i.e. true crime, cults, cryptids, UFOs, ghosts... I've listened for years and still look forward to each new release. Marcus is a master when it comes to compiling each show and provides strong, clear narrative throughout. Most of the time they successfully strike the right balance between serious and fun. The only downside for me is Henry going off at too much of a tangent sometimes! Finally the hosts are all loving dog-dads, and mental health advocates, which just makes me like them even more.
