The Ruby in the Smoke: A Sally Lockhart Mystery

A fantastic tale of deceit with a few plot holes
This is the first look at Sally Lockhart's world, in which we discover she was surrounded by lies told by the people closest to her. A scrappy 16-year-old, Sally is forced to revisit her father's mysterious death after receiving an anonymous letter. From there, she becomes entangled in a dangerous plot all about a valuable jewel.

Philip Pullman manages to capture imaginations through another great work, plunging the reader into stories with gripping plots and delightful twists. My only gripe is that there are a few holes in the story, that doesn't explain some issues at the end or culminates too quickly.

Things I learn from books tend to come in the form of memorable quotes. This book was full of them. Here are some of my favorites...

"To be truly brave, I believe a person has to be more than a little stupid. If you knew how hard or dangerous something was going to be at the onset, chances are you'd never do it,..."

"I believe, in my better moments, that there is a plan and things go not the way we want them to but the way they should."

"The past should stay behind you, where it belongs."

"Everybody wants to be good at something."

"Things don't always work out like you think they're going to."

Awesome script.
Serious underworld thriller
Ronin is a mysterious and serious crime type thriller which takes the viewers into the arena of the crime underworld. An seemingly ex CIA agent named Sam (De Niro) throws his lot in with a group brought together by an Irish Terrorist played by Natascha McElhone. Their task is to steal a suitcase from a dangerous Russian gang. Unfortunately not all goes to plan. There are two great stand out performances by De Niro and Jean Reno but, I thought McElhone and Sean Bean were very good also. There is great action and an especially fast car scene that has Sean Bean spill his lunch. An excellent film.

This is one of my all time favorite movies. As a musical adapted to the big screen, it retains the rhythmic and incredibly precise movements you might expect from a well rehearsed play. Alan Cummings is brilliant, as are Kristen Bell, Christian Campbell, and Ana Gasteyer. The songs are catchy, campy fun, brilliantly skewering the original Reefer Madness for a new generation. As the film descends into reefer madness and the character's dangerous weed addiction provoke more and more unlikely responses, the film's reality begins to unravel into murder, chaos, and marijuana zombies.

Watch this if you like comedic musicals, cannabis induced cannibalism, or you just want to see Kristen Bell in latex S&M gear.

Kelley Armstrong is a cruel, evil woman.

This Fallen Prey takes you on a rollercoaster as Casey tells you all about the day the Council drops a dangerous serial killer into Rockton without any advance warning.

What you get from that point on is a crazy edge of the seat ride as you try and figure out whether he's really what the council have claimed, or if there's something deeper and more complex going on. With betrayals and deaths and twists that just keep you turning the pages, the third book of the Casey Duncan series does not disappoint.

It does leave us with a minor cliffhanger.. and I absolutely cannot wait for the next book!

A new book in the ever magnificent Lux universe. The Darkest Star brings new light to the world while standing on its own as a magnificent book. The plot focuses on both tragic love but equally on just what are Luxon and are they truly the most dangerous aliens out there.
Evie and Luc bring banter, tension, and laughs as they spend more time together and learn exactly who they could be together.
I absolutely adore this book and am excited that it can be read as a standalone and not as a continuation of the orignial series. If you haven't read Lux it is ok, you will still enjoy this book!

When someone starts framing Nick Fox for an international crime spree, FBI agent Kate O’Hare has to jump in to find the true villain. But answers just lead them to a con that is the most dangerous of their partnership.

As always, this book is fast paced and fun with humor to keep things light and danger to keep the pages turning. The characters are getting better, but they could still be stronger. Still, I had so much fun reading this book.

NOTE: I was sent an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Best movie ever!
Okay seriously this is the greatest movie of all time and if you disagree with me you're wrong. Sam Neil? Yep! Laura Dern? Yep! Jeff Goldblum? Yep! I could go on. Oh yeah, and it has dinosaurs and everything goes wrong because well obviously and they had to find a way out of that park to escape all of the dangerous dinosaurs that would kill them. Maybe it wasn't the best idea bringing back the dinosaurs but it sure does make for a great movie, let's leave it that way scientists on the big screen. “Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.”

The best thing you never watched
Banshee was cancelled because no one watched it. Why did no one watch it? I can't say, those that did watch it raved about it. Maybe it was ahead of its time, pre Netflix shows required well known faces, while Banshee recruited actors who were unknown but fit the character.

It was sexy, violent, dangerous and cool. Criminals who are heroes, a bank robber who replaces the ID of a cop who was murdered so becomes the towns police while at the same time trying to hide from his criminal past which wants to kill him. Brilliant stuff. Go watch it now.

It was through word of mouth that it came to my attention and I have rarely heard anyone having negatives to say about it so that seems to fit with your review. It had the right mix of everything that makes a show work. Timing has a lot to answer for in all the arts.
