"Satyajit Ray was an important discovery for me when I was growing up. This is such a fascinating trilogy about a boy who has cursed his family and brings death and destruction to everybody he loves—or at least it feels that way. Of course it’s about a million other things, and in the end it’s about everything. I love The Music Room and so many of Ray’s other films, but there is no overstating how wonderful these three are."

"I enjoy reading epic stories from ancient history and in recent years have been reading abridged versions aloud to my kids. This epic poem was found on a series of ancient tablets from Mesopotamia written down over 4,000 years ago, and involves the central character Gilgamesh, an excessive and oppressive leader, and his arduous journey in pursuit of the secrets of immortality. His character evolves through his personal voyage towards accepting death, and you encounter so many tales that you recognize from history."

"Two great films about the search for meaning in the face of death. The scenes in which the main characters come to terms with their existence—the scene on the swing in the park with the snow falling in Ikiru, and the final scene in Wild Strawberries, where the main character calls across time to his parents and the past—are so powerful and beautiful. It saddens me that most modern-day films don’t approach this level of art and emotion."

"I guess it’s a bit obvious to have a Joan Didion book on my list, but she is my most loved writer of all time. This book is a memoir about the year the followed her husband’s sudden death, and is one of the greatest books about grief and loss ever written. I re-read it last year, after going through a breakup, and it really helped me. I recommend it to anyone who's dealing with the loss of someone or something."

"The Blueprint deserves its own shit. I still remember where I was at and where I bought the album from. I remember driving around in my mom’s car, because she had a little mini-system in her car. I remember playing this album to death, front to back. I only skipped one song, which was ‘Jigga That Nigga,’ but even that I used to play. So even the song I skipped I still know the lyrics to. It’s just a classic, hands down."

Which version do I review? The original? Directors cut? Aunt June's revised 5th edition? How bout just the basics? Decker is a Blade Runner. He hunts down replicants. Is he one too? Who knows. Wanna learn how to make origami? Sure why not. Darryl Hannah is super sexy. One of the best death monologues in a movie ever! Not her... Rutgers. And how neo-noir can you get?!? Cyberpunk baby!!! It's a slow burn though, so be prepared for a long ride.

DNF @ PAGE 70 OF 380.

I've been reading this for nearly two weeks and I'm not getting anywhere with it. Its not pulling me in at all, and doing quite the opposite; boring me to death. It was so slow going.

I'm not sure why I bought it because I dont read many books that aren't romances and I tend to prefer female POV's of which this was neither, at least up to where I got to.

Not my thing at all.

This series is turning pretty amazing. I love how close these six are. They're doing everything they can to make him happier, to stop him from taking his own life, and I think it's actually working.

Volume 5 could be the death of me--making me an emotional, snotty mess--or it could make me so happy I can't stop grinning when I think about it. I'm so hoping for the latter.

Off to start it! See you on the other side!
