"I must have played this album a billion times. They're like a combination of some 70s cop movies from America with Animal from The Muppets playing drums. The drums on it are insane. It's just so distorted. I'd never heard drums like that on a record before. It's just that combination of things which should not work and things which not be regarded as being in good taste. The brass section is almost marching music and it's almost an anti-rock record, but you can't help but love it. Our friend Sam Dook plays guitar in the live band and we went to see them last time they played, at the Concorde in Brighton, and we got to meet yer man who was very gracious and really nice. I felt almost apologetic telling him how much I liked their debut album because I get so fed up with people telling me that they think Pink Flag is the best thing since sliced bread. I apologised to him as I said it, you know. Sometimes if you're a known person and you turn up to see someone live it can seem like you're just going along because we're all pals in show business and all that crap. I wanted to show him that I knew the music and I was really a fan. I played that record to death."

"I’m cautious of musical dynasties. It seems to treat musical ability as some kind of spiritual magic, passed from soul to soul. I don’t get “Only Giles Martin can mix the Beatles because only he has the aura”. Nevertheless, everyone in the Haden family has such a gentle, intelligent, soulful talent that I find it hard to pull out a favourite. Father Charlie Haden is a beautiful, sensitive bass player who has played alongside Ornette Colman, Keith Jarrett and Pat Metheny. He created political, instrumental, jazz with Carla Bley and Don Cherry in the Liberation Music Orchestra. His parents were also singers and performed on the radio as The Haden Family. His son Josh is a bass player and singer with the band Spain and writes the tensest, poised, songs of heartbreak. Petra, Tanya and Rachel are Josh’s sisters and Charlie’s daughters, and although they have been singing for years, it took until 2014 to record their debut album of country songs. Previously Petra and Rachel had been That Dog and Petra had made an acapella version of ‘The Who Sell Out’. They have that synchronicity and intonation that only siblings can have. The three voices move as one. It’s the most straightforward, emotional music. There is no re-inventing of the wheel. It’s just music that lifts the spirits."

Boys Don’t Cry is a beautifully written, funny, tragic debut novel. Honestly, I thought my heart would actually break whilst I was reading this. Fiona Scarlett manages to pack in all the feelings: happiness, anger, grief, humour and heartbreak.

Joe at 17, is the brother left to deal with the death of his 12 year old brother. His father manages to get himself in to trouble, and in to prison. His mother can’t cope. And Joe is struggling too. He is in an environment where it is all too easy for him to take the wrong path and end up like his father. Involved with the wrong people and in prison.

We see flashbacks to Finn as he is diagnosed with Leukaemia and how he copes with the treatment. He is such a happy, generous boy, who worries more about everyone else than about himself.

I don’t want to give much away, but Fiona Scarlett has created two boys who are wonderful human beings, despite the hand that has been dealt to them.
I adored this book. It still gives me a lump in my throat when I’m writing about it, never mind speaking to people about it - I’ll point them in this direction, I think.

It’s like the meme that says “This book has destroyed me and broken my heart. You MUST read it”
So yeah, just read it.
