Jessica spoke to the old me. The me that was bullied in school, felt like her parents didn't care, cut herself at night to keep the emotions and depression at bay. Reading the beginning of her story brought all that back and I was able to mourn along with Jessica. I was all for Jace when he came to her rescue, I was weary of Kingsley when he first introduced himself. It didn't take long for me to switch teams, though. Jace kept messing up and Kingsley was so beautifully broken. The ending tore through me. I don't like to cry when reading, but I couldn't hold back the tears when I read the last chapter. I'm glad there's a second part, I would like to watch Jessica heal after Kingsley's death. The ending also felt a bit abrupt, with Jace suddenly coming back into her life, so taking another journey with her will help process that change.

A bit of a format change, part way through (I preferred the original flavor)
Oh, where to begin? I loved this podcast from the first episode, it's weird in the best ways. Think of an banana split sundae; one scoop of Lovecraft, one scoop of Stephen King, on scoop of various mythologies, a banana of Dadaism, some sprinkles of your local independent music scene, generous dollops of LGBTQ+ acceptance and support, and a single, solitary maraschino cherry of optimism in the face of overwhelming anxiety and depression.

All of this, of course, coming together as the public local news station for a small town, somewhere int he desert.

It's fun. I recommend it. Just make sure the locals don't notice that you're an interloper.

Em & Me by Beth Morrey was another lucky choice on The Pigeonhole! I loved this story about a young, single mum, Delphine, who cares for both her daughter and her father.

Since the death of her mother when she was a young teenager, Delphine has had to care for her father who has been in the depths of grief and depression. Delphine is in survival mode, working two jobs and struggling to make ends meet.

And then the doors begin to open for her. She rediscovers her voice - both spoken and singing. Delphine realises that she wants more, but she has a secret that she’s trying to keep from everyone - including herself.

This is a story of second chances, self-belief, family and friends (both equally as important to Delphine). A thoroughly feel good novel - and we all need one of those from time to time, don’t we!

Many thanks to Beth Morrey for reading along with us and commenting along on the Pigeonhole.
