David McK (3219 KP) rated Doctor Who: Engines of War in Books
Aug 19, 2023
The War Doctor.
A previously unknown incarnation of the Time Lord known only as The Doctor, as portrayed by John Hurt in the Dr Who 50th anniversary special 'the Day of the Doctor' in 2013 during Matt Smith's tenure as The Doctor (and with David Tennant also reprising his role as the same character).
The War Doctor refers to the fact that *this* incarnation participated in the Time War, a fundamental part of the backstory of Nu-Who, between the Daleks and the Time Lords.
Its also open to interpretation whether the Engines of War of the title here are those Daleks, or the various TARDIS's used by the Time Lords during this story, which itself is largely split into 3 segments: part 1 on the planet Moldox (which the Daleks have conquered, and where the Doctor meets his new companion for this story), part 2 on Gallifrey (the home of the Time Lords), and part 3 in the space above Moldox, in the Tantalus Eye.
The result is something that is generally light-weight enough: solid if not spectacular. But, then again, that could probably apply to just about every extended universe tie in there is!

First of a new era for doctor who first appearance of Patrick troughton as the doctor and his first against the daleks unfortunately was wiped from the archives back in the 70s but for doctor who fans this is the animated version which makes up for the loss. Good story the doctor discovers that the daleks are pretnding to be servants to a human colony on the planet vulcan so they can get power to to take over the colony but no one believes him the daleks show devious side manipulating the colony into trusting them which is a side them we don't see that often . U can also watch this in colour but I prefer it black and White highly recommend

Probably my favourite from season 18 saved the best for last not perfect not the best forth doctor story by any means but a good way for the doctor to go out after 7 years in the part. will always be my number one doctor the one I grew up with back in 70s now I've watched it in hi definition it looks amazing. But the worst part still for me is adric didn't like him then but I suppose now I tolrate his character. Good story

Shaun Collins (3 KP) rated Doctor Who: Here There Be Monsters in Books

The first companion chronicle with Susan is a wonderfully cool 1st Doctor adventure, with some very nifty sci-fi concepts that feel like something 60s Doctor Who would have attempted. Carol Ann Ford captures Susan perfectly, with nary a hint that 40 years have passed since she last played the role. For more on this title, visit www.travelingthevortex.com

A fun story with the 4th Doctor, Romana and K9. A few weaker plot moments, but still enjoyable. For a full review, visit www.travelingthevortex.com
