Bird Box (2018)
2018 | Drama, Horror, Sci-Fi
2018 post apocalyptic horror film, that proved to be a big hit for Netflix when it was released on that streaming platform.

Starring Sandra Bullock, this was sold on the (strong) imagery of a blindfolded woman leading two equally blindfolded children through a river journey - the film, later, makes it clear that this is because a mysterious entity has decimated the population, driving whoever sees it (we don't) mad and causing them to commit suicide.

The film is actually told in both the 'now' of the journey and '5 year previously' (when this first started happening), with Sandra Bullock's character of Malorie heavily pregnant and trapped in a house with other survivors - we know, of course (they're not in the 'now'!) that they're all going to be bumped off one by one, but the suspense is in the how and when.

The ending also, apparently, is a lot less dark that the book on which it is based, and I still have little idea why the film is even called Bird Box!

CLAUSING A SCENE is the sixth book in the Christmas Falls series but don't expect to see much of the town!

Brant is Col's best friend. Hig is Col's dad (he was 17 when Col was born.) Both have liked each other for a LONG time and when Col is delayed getting to his dad's, their lust explodes in a shower of purple sparks.

This is one of the steamier stories set in this town, mostly because they hole up in Hig's house and don't want to go anywhere. You hear about the town a couple of times, usually as someone is walking or driving down a road, but that's about it. A couple of characters from other books are also mentioned.

Fast-paced with low angst, this was a great addition to the series and definitely recommended by me.

James and Skip are in Another Hot Situation
When Skip is out with his girlfriend, Emily, at a fancy restaurant, the sous chef is stabbed. Emily and the victim, Amanda, had been friends, and she had set Amanda up with James on a couple of dates. The owner of the restaurant doesn’t trust the police to solve the case, so he hires Skip and James to go under cover in the kitchen to figure out if someone on the staff killed Amanda. But Emily is hiding something about Amanda. Can Skip and James solve the case without driving a wedge between Skip and Emily?

Over the course of the series, the characters have slowly matured, and that continues here, especially for Emily. A couple of the supporting players could have been a little stronger, however. After some initial pacing issues, the plot was solid and built to a logical conclusion. While not a cozy, the content wasn’t too bad overall. I enjoyed this one and am looking forward to seeing how this series wraps up.

Needed a Bit More Focus to Work Well for Me
Iris Sparks and Gwen Bainbridge’s latest client is unusual. She wants them to find a wife for her husband. You see, she’s dying from cancer and knows he will be alone without the help of the Right Sort Marriage Bureau. But when she is found dead, Iris begins poking around to find out what happened to her. Meanwhile, Gwen is focused on her court date to get her life back.

When this series is balancing the mystery with the main character’s storylines, it is wonderful. But that’s not what we got here. While there were some fun twists late in the book, it was too slow early on. Iris isn’t given much in her personal life here, but she does a good job of driving the mystery. The conclusion does tie things up, but I’m not sure I completely bought it. Still, fans of the series will be happy to see what is happening with the characters.
