Dan (19 KP) rated Dungeons and Dragons in Tabletop Games

This will probably be one of my poorer reviews, as D&D is so huge it's hard to describe it. You and your party can be a mix of fighters, rogues, magic users and all sorts, fighting off the dead, dragons, bandits, werewolves, goblins, and more. And while you do it, it's more than likely going to cause hilarity, and some exciting, tense moments.
It can be almost anything you want it to be.

BankofMarquis (1832 KP) rated Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves (2023) in Movies

The 4th film to be based on the RPG game, this D&D is no relation to the previous three and should be viewed as a reboot of the franchise…and if HONOR AMONG THIEVES is an indication of where this film series will go, then the audience is in for a fun ride, indeed.
Written and Directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, D&D follows a smooth talking, good-looking musician (the perfectly cast Chris Pine), his tough-as-nails best friend (the perfectly cast Michelle Rodriguez) and their merry band of thieves as they go on a quest to right wrongs and achieve a goal.
What that goal is doesn’t really matter as it is the journey - not the destination - that matters and the journey is quite fun thanks to an enjoyable cast and a script and direction that evokes memories of THE PRINCESS BRIDE, THE LORD OF THE RINGS and, yes, MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL along the way.
The cast (Pine, Rodriguez, Rege-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis and Hugh Grant) know exactly what type of film they are making and jump in with both feet to have some fun, fight some creatures and make a family-friendly medieval action/adventure comedy that works.
Credit, of course, goes to Daley & Goldstein and this appears to be their first film together as Directors. If that is the case, the BankofMarquis is eager to see where they go from here.
While, I’m sure, there are plenty of Easter Eggs in this film for the D&D fan, the BankofMarquis caught none of that and just sat back and had a really fun 2+ hours, chuckling out loud on more than one occassion.
This film is now streaming on Paramount Plus. If you run across, check it out, you’ll have a good time.

Gitchegumi (28 KP) rated Dungeons and Dragons in Tabletop Games

Rather than running around the playground pretending to be heroes and making up the rules as you go, you sit around your table with a baseline of rules and develop a story with your friends. This game is a highly social experience as there is no requirement for boards and pieces. Everything happens in the minds of the players and dudgeon master (the person who moderates play sessions).
Dungeons and Dragons excels in its ability to create memories for a group of friends who enjoy playing together. I still talk about some of my favorite adventures with friends decades later. There is great potential for developing rich stories in which you and your friends get to play the heroes.
While there is potential for “home brewed” content, that is, content that is completely made up and written by the people running the campaign, Wizards of the Cost also generates fully developed campaigns. This is great for people who feel they aren’t creative enough, are too intimidated, or don’t have enough time to make up their own content. These adventures are very well made, so well that even seasoned home brew players will enjoy them. They go into great detail about the background of the story of the situation so as to help a dungeon master adapt when they players derail the adventure.
All together, this is a great game to tell a high fantasy story staring you and your friends.

Fayce McRobbie (19 KP) rated Player's Handbook (Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition) in Tabletop Games

I started playing again recently with another small group, all of us complete beginners, and owning the books made all the difference. There are a LOT of books available but this is the best starting point if you're new to the game or want to get the basics covered. Of course a lot of the information is also available online but the dungeons and dragons official site doesn't include everything and if you go looking elsewhere you have to trawl through different sites to find everything.
The book lays things out fairly clearly and though there's a lot to get through, it does break things down quite nicely.
It includes character sheets (though you can also find apps for these on your mobile) and covers all of the basics that you need to get started; character creation, dice rolling, battles, equipment, NPCs, spells, animals and so on. It also includes a 'quick build' box for characters to get you started if you're in a hurry.
I'd recommend the book to anyone looking to get started on a campaign, especially if you're without a seasoned player / dungeon master. It was a life saver to our group of newbies and we still refer back to it even now.

KyleQ (267 KP) rated Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves (2023) in Movies

Honor Among Thieves moves along at a brisk pace, using plenty of humor, which is well delivered by its humorous cast.
I was particularly worried from the trailer that this would be too focused on action and humor. Thankfully it wasn't.
Characters all have different backstories, though they are all quite predictable.
The main villain is very interesting and intense.
Action sequences are spaced out, well-choreographed, and quite clever.
Overall, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves doesn't really do anything new or different for the fantasy adventure genre. But what it does, it does well.
Very enjoyable, and a good introduction for D&D into the world of cinema.
