A Few Thousand Dollars: Sparking Prosperity for Everyone
(0 Ratings)
Book Favorite

This books lays out a simple, brilliant and practical way of eliminating the current and painful polarization of wealth and poverty. It proves with practical examples that low-income families will save money for higher education and home-ownership if they have the opportunity. All it takes is the investment of a few thousand dollars in each low-income family. This is far more practical and less condescending than any guaranteed annual income scheme.

Q is set in the near future - or even an alternative ‘Now’. To say that this made me feel supremely uncomfortable would be an understatement. I kept picking it up, reading a bit, and then putting it down - until I got to the last half of the book where I basically inhaled it.

As a parent and a teacher, I found this novel really disturbing. The author has taken where we are now in our education system, and ramped it up to its most exaggerated end point. And it still didn’t seem completely over the top.

In Q’s reality, children are divided up in to their academic ability and put into one of three tiered schools - Silver, Green or Yellow. It’s a relatively new system, and for teacher Elena Fairchild, it’s a dream to teach in a top tier school, where the children are all motivated and high achieving. But when Elena’s youngest daughter is demoted from a Green to a Yellow school, Elena’s loyalty to the education system starts to disintegrate. And when her husband, who works in a senior position in the education department, refuses to save his daughter from being sent hundreds of miles away to a Yellow State boarding school, Elena decides to act.

Ooh, how I loved this. Yes, it’s uncomfortable reading. Yes, it has Eugenics written large all over it (And Elena’s grandmother even warns her and tells her about her youth under the Nazi regime). And yes, it’s uncomfortably close to reality.
But it was a gripping read with a satisfying end. I would recommend it!

"Success is when they have the confidence and resilience to know they can struggle."
Wow. Ms. Lopez is a true inspiration! Everyone who has ever worked in education could learn something from her. Her drive alone is out of this world. There were so many great take aways in this book. It really gives an affirmation to what we as teachers do every day & a reminder that it isn't easy but it is so worth it.

This was a very helpful textbook that I used for a coaching class to get a certification in coaching from the American Sport Education Program. A lot of the information was common sense, but there was some information that I found to be interesting. I enjoyed being able to discuss this with the class. I strongly recommend this if you are clueless about coaching a sport, otherwise I'm not sure how much you would really benefit from it.

1995 | Drama, History, War

"It’s got romance, it’s got national pride, it’s got good vs. evil, it’s got history — again! It’s just wonderful. Unfortunately it was a sad ending; I wish it (wasn’t). It’s based on history and William Wallace did go down and it’s a tribute to a good life, a changing life, and how education can change your life and travel and things and then he comes back to right the wrongs. Plus I did love the French queen, Sophie Marceau."

A 17-year-old's death springboards reporter Eve Diamond into the culture of the parachute kids who come to America for an education. But who wanted to kill the teenage girl? The characters are great, however they are under served by a plot that wanders all over the place. I was done with it long before I reached the end.

Welcome to the hellmouth, we've got double games. Slaughterhouse Rulez (2018) Review
If Hammer House Of Horror had produced “Spaced”, the result could have been a lot like “Slaughterhouse Rulez”. A common room home brew of British Boarding School classics like “If….”, “Goodbye, Mr. Chips” (the 1969 musical version specifically) mixed with “Ghostbusters” and dash of “Harry Potter”, this intoxicatingly lowbrow comedy horror offers a novel spin on the idea that British education has gone to the dogs....

New poem!!! You guys probably don't know, but I'm extremely anti-American Education System. There's a lot of problems that need to be solved, of which I may improve upon another day. But for now, there's this.

This one is called 'A Depressing Poem About How the Education System is Corrupt'

Days have gone by,
Days to weeks,
Weeks to months,
Months to years,
Yes, years.

Years and years
Of the same thing
Over
And over

And over again

No change, No difference,
Nothing else.
Nothing worth knowing,
Nothing that’ll help.

And yet we’re sent away
To this place they say,
“It’ll help, you’ll learn!”
A jail with color.
But that’s all it is.

Locked in the same room,
Same seats,
Same people,
But they don’t see.

They don’t see it hurts,
It hurts a lot.
The pain,
The cost,
So much.

Over and over,
Again and again.
I can’t do this anymore
We can’t do this anymore.

Tired and fed up
All of us
And yet, a revolt?
Ha!

As if. We’re too busy.
Too busy satisfying,
The teachers and parents,
The rest of the world.

Because of course,
Children are to be seen
And not heard.
