Dean (6925 KP) rated Harper's Island - Season 1 in TV

Harper's Island - Season 1
Harper's Island - Season 1
2009 | Drama, Horror, Mystery
Good cast (2 more)
Great remote location
Good gore effects
A good slasher series
I finally got round to checking out this series from 2009, currently available on BBC iplayer. Not sure why it's taken so long to be available again?
It's a good horror/thriller series that mixes the kills of a slasher film with the mystery of a good whodunit? Quite similar to the Slasher series and other related items.
A wedding party retreat to a small island for a week of events leading up to the big day. The island was the location of a serial killer and some murders 7 years before. With some people returning to the island for the first time since it's not long before guests start to meet a grisly end.
It's good fun if you like slasher films or a murder mystery with a decent cast. The overall reason for the killings was a little weak at the end. However the location really adds to the feel of the series. Only 13 episodes around 38 minutes long, you'll whizz through it in no time.

Paul Verhoeven brings all the taste and restraint you might expect to this loose updating of The Invisible Man. Nothing terribly original or surprising about the plot - invisibility experiments go wrong, which (unsurprisingly) nobody saw coming - although the emphasis on the psychological effects of being invisible is something unexpected and genuinely derived from Wells. That said, the main character played by Bacon - second billed, perhaps because he's technically not on screen for much of the film - is such a piece of work to begin with they don't leave themselves much room for manoeuvre.

Selling points of the film are, firstly, the lavish CGI, which I suppose was very good for the time; you can sense the technicians are having fun with it. Also the violence and gore, which is fairly strong for a studio movie; it also has a hard, nasty, sometimes misogynistic edge to it (Verhoeven...!). It all plays out pretty much as you'd expect. Competently done but nowhere near the standard of Verhoeven's best SF films.

Definitively epic
The premise of the story is something I've not seen before. You are a little creature trying to return the light (and other things) to the world that it is situated in. Helping other beings along the way and spreading love/light. I played on my xbox one.

It is a puzzle game that really gets you thinking and is very clever. I spent quite some hours on this game trying to figure out the puzzles. There are several "boss battles" although these are not in the usual sense. I recommend giving it a go to find out.

The fantasy setting is stunning, the special effects, the colours, everything is just dialed up and it looked so wonderful on my HD tv.

The game is almost too sure although I have spent 20 hours completing it, I've now gone back to finish each section of the map to 100%.

If you like puzzle games I would highly recommend even for the less frequent gamer (like myself).
