Writer/Director M. Night Shyamalan is back with his new thriller “Knock at
the Cabin” and like his earlier works; the film blends reality with
supernatural elements to put ordinary people in circumstances that are
dangerous and unnatural.
The film involves a same-sex couple named Eric (Jonathan Groff) and Andrew
(Ben Aldridge), who have taken their adopted daughter Wen (Kristen Cui),
to a secluded cabin for a relaxing vacation.
The arrival of four strangers lead by the imposing but soft-spoken Leonard
(Dave Bautista) becomes dangerous when Leonard informs them that the world
is about to end and only by choosing to sacrifice one of them can the
Apocalypse be diverted.
Leonard explains that the four had the same vision of the end of the world
and that they were drawn to save it by taking such drastic actions. They
inform their captives that they will not harm them but they will not be
allowed to leave as they must make the choice and failure to do so will
doom everyone and force the three of them to exist as the sole-survivors
of the aftermath.
Convinced that the intruders are insane; Eric and Andrew refuse the offer
and watch as one of the four captives sacrifices themselves which is soon
followed by news on the television of a massive earthquakes which resulted
in tsunamis.
Convinced it is a ruse or simply timed events to the days news; the
captives again refuse a request only to see another sacrifice followed by
more news of devastation happening around the world.
What follows is a tight thriller as Eric and Andrew learn more about their
captives and the changing world situation which forces them to confront a
world gone mad.
The film is good at setting a tone and maintaining a mild tension
throughout as the audience is left to wonder how real what is being
presented by Leonard and his associates are. I liked the fact that the
movie did not try to wrap things up nice and tidy and left the audiences
with some questions about the events as well as what would happen in the
aftermath.
Bautista gives an career-best performance and shows that his is capable of
doing more than the action-comedy genre which he has been playing to date
and I hope he continues to seek roles such as this.
While the film may not reach the levels of some of his earlier classics,
Shyamalan has crafted an entertaining film that keeps you guessing.

When I started reading -The Night Circus-, Erin Morgenstein's writing got my attention, from the very first paragraph:
'The Circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it, no paper notices on downtown posts and billboards, no mentions or advertisements in local newspapers. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not.'
This sense of mystery and intrigue is the thing I liked the most about 'The Night Circus', along with the vivid and beautiful descriptions throughout the book.
I'm not usually the type of reader who enjoys a lot of descriptive prose, but the way in which Morgenstein describes the circus and its inhabitants was sensual, magical and totally swept me away with the story.
I'm also not a fan of romance in novels. Most of the romantic writing I have ever read, has either been slushy, boarding on nauseating, or devoid of any chemistry whatsoever. However, the romantic elements within this novel were passionate and believable.
The characters within this novel were believable too, even though most of them were rather quirky. The atmosphere within this novel reminds me of those mysterious classics such as 'Around the World in 80 days' or 'The Invisible Man', not so much in the way of plot, but in essence. There is a old fashioned quality to 'The Night Circus' which I thought was endearing and also, a refreshing change from more modern stories.
The only observation I could make about this novel, is that I felt that the conclusion to the novel was slightly rushed. Although, maybe I felt this because I didn't want to 'The Night Circus' to end.
If you enjoy a story with magic, beautiful description and a plot which unfolds slowly, then this is the novel for you.
I already can't wait to re-read 'The Night Circus'.

Totally memorable
THE GREAT ALONE was the book I didn't know I wanted to read until I read a few pages and proceeded to devour it over two days. This book had a powerful, captivating story to tell as well as educating me on the struggles and beauty of Alaskan life and community.
Narrated over a few decades, THE GREAT ALONE focuses in the main on the growth from teenager to adulthood of Lenora (Leni) Allbright. She’s a teen whose dad is a broken man post-Vietnam POW experiences, he’s ill and abusive and her mother can’t stop loving him. They move to Alaska without any experience of that kind of environment. Their struggle to survive was absolutely gripping and tangible. The descriptions gave the environment and abuse high-definition quality with sight, sound and smells.
The themes of this book were difficult to read at times, I needed breathers and the occasional tissue. I would say that the love story between Leni and Matthew was subtle and yet powerful. I willed them together despite the risks, I wanted some joy in Leni’s life. I felt Leni’s emotions with regards to her parents so convincingly. The local community in their Alaskan village made for a developed character context, I loved so many of the side characters.
The book overall is so well written, considering the difficulty of conveying the setting and themes. I felt so many emotions reading this book and I am eager to try more by Kristin Hannah. The final wrap up of the storyline was a little fast but I was satisfied in the end result.
