Sticking closer to the 'original' Sherlock Holmes story, setting wise, than the 2010 Benedict Cumberbatch-starring BBC show, this is set - as the name implies! - before the Sherlock Holmes stories of Arthur Conan Doyle; before he becomes a 'consulting detective' in late Victorian England.

This also gets a lot of mileage out of the bromance between Sherlock and James Moriarty who, here, have yet to become rivals and are instead the best of friends as they investigate a mystery surrounding the Holmes family and - in particular - Sherlock's father and younger sister Beatrice.

Enjoyable.

While there is now something like 23, maybe 24, Sharpe novels by Bernard Cornwell when this was released there was only roughly half that.

This is the only novel (so far) to be set mainly in England, with Richard Sharpe and Patrick Harper travelling back to London to find the missing recruits from their second battalion - a storyline to which this adaptation sticks remarkably closely.

It's not perfect, of course, with subplots left out or condensed somewhat (and the lack of budget shows), but it is still a good enough watch!

Pros:
â–ª Laugh out loud dark humour
â–ª Footnotes
â–ª Set in England
Cons:
â–ª I didn't find it sooner?!
Why have I not known about this book until now? Please someone tell me! I picked this up in my local bookstore last week for £1 (mainly due to the intriguing cover) and I quickly found out it's actually very popular.
One thing I loved about this book was that it was set in England, reading such a classic with local town names and even roads and motorways that I know very well really made it for me.
The dark humour in it is absolutely laugh out loudable... some people have compared it to hitch hikers guide humour which is odd because I'm not actually a fan of the hitch hikers... but good omens just had me from page 1.
There are quite alot of characters which can make it a little tricky to keep track but I didn't have too much trouble with this as I took my time reading it.
The added footnotes I found really helpful, some funny and others were genuinely helpful with extra information.
I'm quite excited to hear that Amazon are currently making this into a show!
I 100% recommend GoOD OMeNs!
