"The novel begins “Long ago in 1945 all the nice people in England were poor, allowing for exceptions.” It’s in the bombed out London of 1945 at the end of the war in a shabby, genteel boarding house for young ladies called the May of Teck Club. We meet the various girls of slender means and follow their lives and love affairs. I love all Muriel Spark’s books and think she is witty and elegant and spiky and weird. I met her once in Italy when I was a teenager and she told me, “For the next ten years all you should do is sleep and go to parties.”"

"It was seminal, you know? It’s still a cult film for actors. It’s just about two out-of-work actors in England. I keep that on my iPad; I’ll go back and watch that at any point or scene. And there’s a performance by Uncle Monty (Richard Griffiths) — I think it’s one of the greatest comedic performances I’ve seen in my life. Such a wonderful film. It just reaffirms to me that I’m part of an ongoing world of actors. It’s funny, but it’s also beautiful in the end. When Grant does the Hamlet speech… It’s about success, failure, moving on, friendship, loss, and just life. It’s brilliant."

The final entry in Bernard Cornwell's long-running 'Saxon Stories'/'The Last Kingdom'/Warrior Chronicles' (the series name seems to keep changing), that first started way back in the early noughties with The Last Kingdom, with the series following Uhtred of Bebbanburg: born a Saxon, raised by the Danes and reluctantly fighting for Alfred (the future 'the Great') of Wessex.

We're now into his - Alfred's - grandchildren time, and the notion of England has now come to all but fruition: indeed, by the end of this novel, and after the battle of Brunanburgh, all of the counties are united under the rule of Aethelstan.

A fitting end to the series.
