A gorgeous grown up fairytale.
At first, this seems to be an innocent fairytale, but it swiftly becomes more of a proper, adult fairytale. It's a warning to the Folk that they shouldn't break their promises to the Travelling Folk.
The main character is a young girl with no name: to name her is to tame her. She falls in love with the local Lord's son, and he DOES name her. She loses the ability and the freedom to travel in the bodies of wild animals (I really liked this part). He betrays her, and she decides to exact her revenge on him so that she can get her magical abilities back. It's a beautiful story with some lovely illustrations, and each new section has a quote from a Child Ballad or an old wives/ folk saying.
It's novella size, so a quick read (I could have read more!), and well worth it.

Such a great book! Agniezska (pronounced ag-NYESH-Kahn) is a wonderful heroine. Humble loyal and a bit of a mess, she leaves her home valley to live with a terrifying lord wizard named Dragon. Slightly graphic in some places, this modern Eastern European flavored fairytale will spark anyone's imagination.

There are no two ways about this: I love fairytale retellings. I’ve yet to find one I don’t like (I’m also picky). Perhaps it’s because I like the firm sense of right and wrong with no nuance in-between? Or the fact that I immersed myself in myth, folklore and fairytale as I was growing up? Well, whatever the reason, it has stuck 🤷🏼♀️
What I really enjoyed about The Forest Grimm was its pastiche style: as Clara makes her way through the dangerous Grimm forest on the hunt for a magical book that has disappeared from her village (Sortes Fortunae, or the Book of Fortunes), she encounters characters out of fairytales who are as far from helpful as they can be!
These characters reminded me of the original Brothers Grimm fairytales: poisoning, maiming, murder all methods used by the fairytale characters. Clara and Axel (the boy she’s destined never to be with) stick together to survive and discover that perhaps fate isn’t necessarily set.
I really enjoyed this, and I have the second book all ready to listen to at some point, too!

Tahereh Mafi has an incredible gift. Her writing is beautiful in a way that isn't seen much these days. This companion to Furthermore is another glorious fairytale that I couldn't get enough of. I truly hope she continues this captivating series.
