Thrilling and intense!

I am loving this work of fiction with underlying nuggets of facts spread throughout. The intricacies of relationships, loyalty and duties. This on top of amnesia, with deadly punishment for those who show disobedience, is a bit of a rollercoaster that's for sure.

Written as a standalone disavow is brilliant, romantic and suspenseful. It's part of a multi-auther series that is independently written.....what a cool way to keep things fresh and interesting.

Rosalia is our strong, female lead......she's also the one with amnesia. I really like how she has been described and portrayed. I feel for her and had my fingers crossed all the way through for her. The way she's facing so many problems head on and showing inner strength is awesome.

What do you get if you take 'Universal Soldier', add a dollop of 'Terminator 2', a sprinkle of 'The Matrix', and a vertiginous punch-up that could have been taken straight from 'Spider-Man 2'?

The answer is this movie.

Except it's not as good as any of the previously mentioned; missing that spark that makes all of them science-fiction classics.

Vin Diesel - in-between headlining The Fast and the Furious franchise - must simply have been looking for a payday.

Here, he pays marine Ray Garrison, resurrected by a team of scientists after he and has wife are murdered, and setting out on a mission of revenge. It also takes about 45 minutes or so before you get to the good(ish) stuff, where the layers start to peel away ...

Who knew radio operators during WWII were known as pianists? I certainly didn't.

The story is told from the perspectives of the two pianists ... Marnie in London and Connie in Amsterdam. Marnie and Connie are exceptionally strong characters and the author transported me into their worlds amongst the bombs of the blitz and the invasion of the Nazi's where trust can be a dangerous thing.

With oodles of tension, the fear palpable and the bravery and courage of those working against the Nazi war machine excellently portrayed, the War Pianist is a gripping story and whilst this is a work of fiction, it felt authentic and was totally riveting.

Many thanks to Avon Books UK and NetGalley for enabling me to read and share my thoughts of The War Pianist.

Flipping heck, I’ve read some good historical fiction lately! North Woods by Daniel Mason is one such book. Multiple points in history, narrative voices and styles all linked by place. Absolutely marvellous!

I don’t think I actually want to say too much about all the different characters in this book, except to say that it spans from a Puritan colony to the present day, all linked by the North Woods. It’s a gorgeous novel that had my heart in my mouth at several points and made me wish that I could see this place with my own eyes. The love of the landscape and nature shines through this gorgeous novel.

And, well, the end of this novel is the real tour de force. Utterly beautiful. A book of the year for me, that’s for certain.
