Death Or Glory by The Clash

"Again, it was my Dad who turned me onto The Clash. I fell in love with Combat Rock first and then I ate my way through that band. It was like a goldmine or a candy store. So many of their songs have changed my mind about music lot, but I picked “Death Or Glory” because it was one of their better sounding songs that seems a bit overlooked. I was impressed by the sound of it, there’s acoustic guitars in there and the fidelity sounds good, that was really smooth and appealing. With the acoustic guitars and electric guitars, it was almost pre-dating some of that Americana stuff. It’s so powerful and it’s not super punk. “Death Or Glory” is like a call-to-arms, it sounds triumphant and I love that. The lyrics are great as well – ‘Now every cheap hood strikes a bargain with the world’ it’s great stuff man, Strummer was insane in that way."

"Another one I saw as a kid and have seen many times since. It’s etched itself into my mind, both the visuals and the story. First of all, this melancholy provincial town, this shabby hotel where the Victory Day is being celebrated. I adore these atmospheres in Poland. And this typically Polish situation, where the urge to live clashes with the sense of duty, where hope is mixed with cynical despair. The way that history gets in the way of love—that obviously stayed with me. Then there are the deep-focus compositions and the dramatic lighting. And it has so many memorable scenes, like the vodka glasses that are lit and sent sliding down the bar counter in a kind of All Souls ceremony. And the assassinated politician embracing his petrified killer. And Cybulski. I love films carried by a bravura performer, especially when it’s not posturing and the character is complicated and real."

"""1932 film. I just watched it. It was on TCM a few weeks ago. It’s the first Island of Doctor Moreau film. It’s Charles Laughton and Bela Lugosi, and he’s experimenting with the animals. He’s trying to turn them into humans, but he mostly fails, and so he has these horrible creatures trapped, and they’re enslaved. And it’s an amazing, dark, terrifying film. And — this is true — when it came out in 1932, audiences found it so horrifying, people threw up in their seats. They threw up in the movie, they were so horrified by this film. I love that. I love that. I really recommend it. It’s very short and to the point, and this guy is shipwrecked, and he’s trapped on the island with Dr. Moreau, and finding out what he’s doing. And he’s actually created a woman out of a panther or something who’s almost a full woman but not quite. It’s pretty damn clever."""

"I listened to Joni so much when I was like 15, and later also. Is this one my favourite? I don't know. Probably. I love For The Roses and I love The Hissing Of Summer Lawns. But Court And Spark is also a little… rock? Not rock, but it's very '70s. When I first heard it, it sounded grossly '70s in an uncool way. When I was in high school, it was a new sound for me and for a while it almost wasn't something I would be comfortable saying that I was into. It was folky vibes and '60s stuff that was cool. It's slightly jazzy, slightly funky and those sounds began to actually be very exciting for me despite what everyone else might have thought. The songs are very relatable for someone of that age, even though they were written by an older person. You take a song like 'People's Parties' and the psychologies and the stories within the songs: it's fascinating to me."

"It's a record she did with Dan Carey. I love this record because I first heard Emilíana when she did 'Easy' and it's a record [Love In The Time Of Science] she did with Eg White, and I adored it. And years later I worked with Eg, and he did a song for me called 'Leave Right Now'. I've always loved her music, and then I worked with Dan Carey. They had worked together before Me And Armini, but he produced the whole thing. I went on X Factor and gave albums to people who I was mentoring. Then I went to Iceland to shoot a video and about five people came up to me and were so sweet and saying thank you so much for mentioning her. I think it's her best record, because it's so punchy in its production, and it's no surprise it's been her most far-reaching record."

As a romance reader, I love any hint of romance between the characters in books and in this, after what happened between Gin and Donovan in the first book, my hopes soared. But with it being Urban Fantasy, romance isn't really a major plotline in it.

The more I read the more I understood that things probably weren't going to work out well between these two. A (semi) retired assassin and the only un-crooked cop in the force? Hmm...

But lo and behold we have a new love interest! So I'm still pretty happy.

As for the rest of the story, I got dragged into it. I really wanted Gin to kick everyone's arses and come out on top and although it got a little dicey in places she did!

I'm off to start book 3 to read what she's going to get up to next (and hopefully she'll get a little hot and heavy with the new guy!)
