Disappointed
The trailers for this movie looked okay, I'm sick to the back teeth of Kevin Hart, but I am a big fan of The Rock and the film looked fairly humorous. It wasn't going to get me into the cinema, but it did enough to warrant me to check it out once it left the cinema. Then the movie was recommended to me by several people who had been to see it, so I stuck it on, expected to have sore sides from laughing. I'm still waiting for the hilarious movie that I was promised by the folk who recommended this.
I chuckled maybe a total of 4 times during the movies runtime and the 4 times I chuckled were during scenes that I had already seen in the trailers. I can't be the only one that is fed up with Kevin Hart doing the exact same shtick in every film he shows up in and he doesn't do anything to redeem himself here. Even The Rock, the most charismatic man in Hollywood, can't save this mess.
Give it a skip, just don't bother. Watch the trailers for a few chuckles and then go watch a funnier movie. It's not even an awful movie, it's just not funny and frankly boring at times.

It's customary for the makers of new Jane Austen adaptations to declare they've come up with a bold new approach to the material. This almost invariably turns out not to be the case (we end up with all the usual balls, carriages, and people swanking about in top hats and Empire-line dresses) and it would probably be a bad idea anyway: a large segment of the audience of Jane Austen movies turns up precisely because they know exactly what they're going to get (balls, carriages, etc) and would be upset if it wasn't there. This version of Emma should suit them very nicely.
The director is also a photographer which probably explains why the composition and look of the thing is so impeccable, but may also have something to do with why the story feels a little a bit flat and difficult to follow near the start (there are lots of characters to keep track of). Not what you'd actually call rip-snortingly funny or especially romantic, but the performances are decent. The most interesting creative choice is the use of traditional folk music at various points on the soundtrack (Johnny Flynn sings as well as acts), but its authenticity does feel rather at odds with the tone of the rest of the movie. Passes the time decently - people who like this sort of thing will probably like Emma, too.

Hack-O-Lantern is a ride. It boasts a simple plot about a Satanic cult grooming a young boy all the way through adult hood to join their ranks, whilst his siblings just try to enjoy teenage life, and a maniac in a devil mask runs about town killing folk with a pitchfork, all on Halloween night. Standard slasher stuff, but with randomly thrown in music videos, strip teases, and belly dancing. The film even stops dead for a few minutes to show us a stand up comedy routine. It's really really odd.
The whole experience is ball achingly 80s, complete with questionable acting, awkward dialogue, passable gore effects, and an absolutely raging music score. All of the music just sounds like Final Fantasy battle music. It's incredible.
Hack-O-Lantern was aired as part of Joe Bob Briggs 2020 Halloween Special, and is worth a watch to gain some insight into why this films is so weird and disjointed, such as director Jag Mundhra speaking very little English accounting for some of the bizarre dialogue, and his Indian background explaining the out of place Bollywood elements sprinkled throughout. It's a pretty fascinating and quirky horror all in all.
If you're looking for a cheap, ridiculous, and absurd 80s horror, then this ticks all the right boxes.

What's In A Name?
One of the big three British folk-horror movies (along with Witchfinder General and The Wicker Man) and the only one to go for an explicitly supernatural storyline: in 18th century England, a ploughman unearths a deformed skull, which mysteriously disappears soon after. Insanity, mutation and violence begin to spread amongst the young people of the area, forcing the local judge to take extreme measures in the cause of virtue.
On one level this does sound like the broadest kind of exploitative schlock, and it's true that the monster suit at the end is utterly crapulous, but this does not take into account the disturbingly dreamy atmosphere conjured up by director Haggard and Marc Wilkinson's score. There's a touch of the genuine gothic in the way something ancient and disturbing erupts into a quietly bucolic world.
Plus, there is a hard edge of gleeful nastiness to this film which is wholly lacking from the movies being made by Tigon's better-known rivals at Hammer and Amicus during the same period. There's a sense in which most Hammer movies feel like costume dramas with a little blood included as a contractual obligation, but Blood on Satan's Claw goes all-out to mess the viewer up - it's not especially frightening as such, but it's a very unsettling, creepy movie that's a worthy successor to an ancient English tradition of supernatural horror stories.
