This would have been better as a novella. I felt there was more filler than normal and it was odd that she had two books building to something, I expect that the next one will be something large. I'm not going to lie I did think of Monty Python while reading this book so there were some unintentionally (?) funny parts. There is the usual Mercy wit so that's good Picks up not too long after Storm Cursed. I enjoyed this book but it wasn't my favorite.

"This was one of those life-changing books that finally popped the light off in my little brain, when I read this at 24. These are mostly letters to students, and Seung Sahn writes in this funny, broken-invented English way that screams off the page to be understood; there is nothing clever. I gave it to all my friends. This led us to start email chains for the past few years that now sign off: ‘ALL THE TIME JUST SAY: DON’T KNOWWWWW’ (to be read in Korean accent)"

"This documentary is about the Leonard Bernstein-conducted recording of the score in the 80s, with Kiri Te Kanawa and José Carreras. That soundtrack was a staple at home when I was growing up – we had this glossy, massive four-cassette tape box of it. Bernstein is such an interesting person: temperamental, feisty, impatient, funny, smoking cigarettes in his red polo neck. And to see him conduct his music – this incredible, ambitious, interesting, crazy, heartbreaking music, which is never schmaltzy, but crunchy and angsty, and then with these moments of release – is really amazing."

Gunnar Björnstrand is great as the unbearable lawyer Egerman, playing against the delightful trio of Swedish actresses Harriet Andersson (beyond cute), the aforementioned Dahlberg, and Ulla Jacobsson. A good entry into the world of Bergman for anyone who is expecting dark meditations on mortality."
