A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy (1982)
A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy (1982)
1982 | Comedy

"Last one is A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy. I don’t think it’s up there on most people’s lists. I just think it’s so beautiful. It’s very funny, but very gentle, and it also deals with issues of life and death in a very serious way. I can remember every time I saw it crying at the end. And part of it, too, is [Woody Allen] makes this incredibly good use of Mendelssohn’s music. I think the entire score is — I’m not sure about the soundtrack — but the score is Mendelssohn. I just think it’s a really exquisite piece of filmmaking."

Dumbo (1941)
Dumbo (1941)
1941 | Animation, Classics, Family

"Dumbo is my favorite movie of all time. A remarkable motion picture. Just over 60 minutes, it’s so tight in terms of storytelling. It’s like [snaps fingers]. When you have kids and you watch Dumbo, it really nails you because there’s that “Baby Mine” sequence. I like [Dumbo] because it’s the most cartoony of Disney features. I like it because the main character doesn’t talk. Such a wonderful film. It is very funny. Great music. It also really moves you. It has a really huge heart. Walt Disney always said that for every laugh, there should be a tear. I live by that."

"Lastly, I gotta throw it in there, I gotta say D.C. Cab. [laughs] I know that probably no one else says that, but I’m born and raised DC. I’m DC through and through. It will always be in my heart. Again, me and little Dougie Thornel grew up watching that movie on VHS over and over and over again. It shows a little bit of the real DC that I think never gets shown in films and television. I just love the movie. I think it’s the only honest DC movie ever made, and its funny as hell."

Heaven Can Wait (1978)
Heaven Can Wait (1978)
1978 | Comedy, Romance, Sci-Fi

"Perfect movie. Perfect DVD. If enough people see this disc, Heaven Can Wait will gain its rightful place in the pantheon of the greatest movies ever made. Elegant, warm, funny, wise, and unbelievably exquisite-looking, this film is Lubitsch’s finest two hours. I vote that we retire It’s a Wonderful Life for a few years and annually watch Heaven Can Wait instead. It is the better movie. The DVD extras include Richard Corliss’s intelligent interview with screenwriter Samson Raphaelson, and the video analysis by Andrew Sarris and Molly Haskell (the Tracy-Hepburn of film criticism) is as sublime as the movie."

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
1975 | Comedy

"To me, Monty Python and the Holy Grail is the funniest movie ever made. There are influences in this film that caused me to write Black Dynamite. I’m such a Monty Python Fan. I think that the layers of humor go from absurdly silly to very intellectual and then you have the physical humor on top of that. I don’t think I’ve seen a movie as physically and mentally funny with the brilliance of satire and political humor underneath it. This movie is just so layered, and again it is what influenced me in writing Black Dynamite."
