"A wonderful critical reexamination of German cinema under Joseph Goebbels. Rentschler goes far beyond the demonizing approach employed by most writers on this subject (like Susan Tegel in Nazis and the Cinema). His excerpts from Goebbel’s diaries are priceless. And after all these years he dares to make a fair appraisal of Nazi filmmaker Veit Harlan."

A great story about a little girl's adventure across her families farms to take a message in German for her grandma, she keeps up with her responsibility despite many adventures and possible distractions. A wonderful ending for the young serves to highlight how the language of love can be universal despite generational gaps and reluctance to learn the “old tongue”.

This was an enjoyable, well-researched historical fiction novel set during WW2 in Rome.
Cordelia Olivieri’s life in Rome becomes more precarious as the Italian fascists start to identify more Italians with Jewish heritage. Cordelia’s English mother was Jewish. She has a friend in the Vatican who promises to get her on a transport to England, if she will just photograph the German plans for North Africa. This seems a simple task (or not!), as the German officer in charge of the planning for Rommel has taken over Cordelia’s hotel as his centre of operations. But Cordelia complicates things somewhat when she starts to fall in love with him.
The villains in this book are thoroughly despicable, and the ‘goodies’ are in constant danger. It’s all very nail-bitingly exciting and another great read on The Pigeonhole!

"I can’t help but include this book on any list I’d ever make of books I love. It is bewitching, playful, poetic, and really beautiful. Ingrid Caven looks like Marlene Dietrich and sings like Lotte Lenya. She was Fassbinder’s muse on film and Schuhl’s in life, and the book creates a fictive plane of reality in between all four, plus postwar German history, plus the 1970s."

This outstanding novel covers Adolf HitlerÕs meeting with Neville Chamberlain in 1938. The grave shadow of Chamberlain, deeply opposed to another conflict only twenty years after the Great War that had killed a generation of men. Against Hitler, 'the madman' ready to 'smash the Czechs' and blaze through new territories. This meeting in Munich is the focal point of the novel and Harris rewrites real events using two bystanders, one German, one English. Based on fact, Harris skilfully interweaves the lives of Hugh Legat and his English wife, rich, beautiful and unfaithful. Paul Von Hartmann and his lover, a secretary in the German foreign ministry, someone he may not entirely trust. It's Harris' attention to detail that makes this version of history so credible, right down to the description of the swastikas on the taps. A tightly woven thriller mixed with historical fact that will appeal to a lot of readers.

"I remember the story of Lacombe, Lucien, who was seduced by the German occupiers to be a quisling. They made him feel he was “somebody.” The film, being after the war, dealt with his psychic examination of who he was; many of his contemporaries would not forgive him. I knew director Louis Malle personally, and I know that attracted me to see his film, which was somewhat autobiographical."

"For me, this film is about the pleasure of entering into an outsider’s observations of one’s own territory. A German filmmaker comes to rural Wisconsin in the mid-1970s, and sees things that I might take for granted, and shows how ridiculous or moving they are. The emotional range is tremendous. Herzog is not afraid of symbolism. The ending, featuring a dancing chicken in a highway rest stop sideshow, is absurdly devastating."

"This crazy German took what Sirk had done to a whole new level with only five bucks in his pocket. There’s never been a more precise director working in the low-budget world. I love the delivery of every line here. Love has such small chances in a world riddled with bullshit, and Fassbinder proves that it can thrive only where tremendous kindness is exerted. Also, I will never shun couscous after watching this!"

William Holden at his finest!
I had always heard how great this film was, but had never seen until last night. I love the William Holden films I have seen (which isn't many) so I am glad I finally got to watch.

During WWII at the German POW camp, captured American and European soldiers try and make the best of things while trying not to anger their German captors while trying to figure out how to escape.

Two men are shot dead at the beginning doing just that and suspicions arise quickly as to how the Germans discovered the escape plot so quickly. The prisoners figure out there mus be a German collaborator in their midst feeding their captors information and spying on them. All eyes point to Sefton (Holden) since he trades with the guards and they treat him well.

The tone of this film was a lot lighter than I expected. I thought it would be more like The Bridge on the River Kwai or The Great Escape, but it ended up being more like an episode of Hogan's Heroes at times. This is not a complaint, I was just surprised.

The comradery among the men was humorous and compelling at times while they try and figure out who has been snitching on them to the Germans. Once it is figured out, they have to try and save an officer who has joined their ranks before they are discovered.

A true classic.
