Thir13en Ghosts (2001)
2001 | Horror
The Lore and mythos of the ghosts, and the principles behind some of the setting are interesting, and some of the acting isn't too bad. Some of the special effects are decent, and it was great that so much of the set was physical and tangible. (0 more)
Holes everywhere, characters that disappear and reappear at random, inconsistent rules, and frankly not many scares of note for a horror film. (0 more)
The ghosts aren't the only thing that we can see through...

As part of a 'rewatching films from the 90's and 2000's' theme that me and the missus are going through at the moment, we came to a film i remembered fairly fondly, the remake of Thirteen Ghosts!

Unlike a lot of films from this period, this wasn't as terrible to rewatch as some, though it still reeks of some of the tropes of that period, including the casting of Shannon Elizabeth, the evil uncle and the corporate Lawyer baddie as well as the kids that can't help but run towards trouble at every opportunity.

Lets be honest, this film isn't really a scary one, it has some nice creepy elements, but it is largely a safe horror entry for people that shy away from the more intense/gory side of the genre.

Matthew Lillard chews all the scenery he can, and is largely very entertaining as a psychic with powers that they touch on without really explaining, but thats ok, its not the sort of film where it matters all that much.

Better than some, worse than others, this is a film for a rainy sunday evening, where it doesn't matter too much if you talk over the miles and miles of exposition, and where you can happily pull apart the plot holes and confusing character motives to your hearts content.

Medieval England, the ruthless King John sits on the throne. And Lady Merry Ellison has but one mission: To see to the safety of her “men”.

Set in the year 1216, England is in ruin. The nation is divided, scores of outlaws live in the forest and they do what they must to survive. Lady Merry will do anything to protect the orphans that make up their band known as “The Ghosts of Farthingale Forest”. Timothy Grey longs to become someone of power and authority. So he sets out to capture the ghosts, not knowing who their leader is. Will he turn in the ghosts and earn approval from his master? Or will he follow his heart and the leading of God?

Dauntless is the first book that I have read by Dina Sleiman, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was very engaging and quite the page turner. I loved how she used older English, but not so “olde” that I couldn’t understand the book. The “Historical Notes” were very informative and helpful to read. I wish I would have read it first, even thought there are a few spoilers in it. Her portrayal of the supernatural was very vivid. I liked it a lot! This story was a good reminder that things happen in our lives that we don’t always understand. But we must remember that God has a purpose for everything. Although we may never know why, we must trust Him and know that He truly knows best. Yes, I know, easier said than done. But in this story, the journey of reestablishing faith in God was amazing to behold and I pray that it brings you hope.

I received a free digital edition of Dauntless from Bethany House Publishers through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

Excellent game
This game is incredibly fun. The basic concept is something like a cross between the movie Frequency and Stranger Things with a fun synth score. A group of teens end up on a haunted island in a series of time loops and have to use radios to communicate with the ghosts and break free. It's an easy way to lose a few hours, and then play all over again with a few surprises. This is among my top IOS games for sure.

I love Susanna Kearsley's novels, they are, in fact, my favorite sort of novels. Partially historical fiction, modern fiction, with a hint of supernatural in the form of ghosts, typically.
I was excited when I read the synopsis of this novel, and couldn't wait to read it. I was slightly disappointed by it, because it wasn't as good as her other novels. The historical portion was a little slow, and the modern novel portion was fairly predictable. I still enjoyed it, just not as much as I would have liked to enjoy it.

Old fashioned creepy
A good old fashioned ghost story. A creepy old house, odd servants, a pregnant widow left to her own thoughts in a big empty house.

And wooden people! Wooden people who multiply! And move on their own!

The story is set over 3 time periods. In the 1600s and in the 1800s. What happens in the earlier time is revealed through a diary found by one of the later characters.

Is it witchcraft? Is it insanity? Or ghosts? Read this book to find out. I really enjoyed it.

Mitch Malone has returned to his hometown to teach a seminar on investigative reporting. But that also means facing the ghosts of his past, including several tragic deaths. The murder of his high school crush forces him into facing things he's been running from for a long time. I enjoyed the mystery, which was very fast moving. I felt like the characters outside of Mitch could have used more development.

I saw this one on Amazon. It was pretty creepy once it got past the slow start. The storyline itself was pretty interesting. It was ultimately about secret governmental testing on people in the past. The characters were ok. Not a lot of depth to them but the acting is mediocre. The effects and camera tricks could've been a little better but they conveyed everything well enough. Overall I'd recommend it if you're into creepy ghost stories. Worth a watch.

Gene Simmons recommended Psycho (1998) in Movies (curated)

Psycho (1998)
Psycho (1998)
1998 | Horror, Mystery

"Psycho is a wonderful, elevated horror film, and it doesn’t necessarily have monsters or ghosts,” Simmons says. “You ever see Psycho? I’m embarrassed to say that there are people out there who don’t have a clue what I’m talking about. Shame on them. It’s interesting to note Psycho had murders and all this kind of wacky stuff but you never saw a knife go into a body. You never saw a body actually bleed. I think that made it even more horrific. Sometimes the scariest things are what human beings are capable of.”

This has just proved something to me; that I'm not really interested in reading about the Fey. It's.nothing to do with Richelle, I've started several series' and this just proved it by lack of excitement over it.

That aside, this is my third series by the author, Vampire Academy and Georgina Kincaid the others, and it was okay, but as I said above, I'm jot that big a fan of the Fey. Vampire, werewolf, ghosts, etc. and I'm all over it. This series not so much. Therefore I don't think I'll be continuing it.

Haunting of Hill House Review
Haunting of Hill House is a Netflix Original released mid 2018. The show caught me off guard as I suspected it was just another show on Netflix thst was hyped up and failed to entertain. However, I was surprised to find myself binging the season every chance I got in my spare time. The first thing that intrigued me was the "Easter Egg Ghosts" is what I have labeled them. These ghosts would appear somewhere in certain scenes that the characters never notice but we, the audience, noticed. They're not in every episode or every scene, but they're there. The spookiness of this show was far better than I thought it would be, the story was unique enough to leave me wanting more, the ending took a different turn than it was leading up to, not a bad turn, definitely a different turn. The show in my opinion deserves a lot more attention than I feel it has received as it isn't just another ghost story, it's one that had kept my wife and I on the edge of our seats but also on guard in the dark. Check The Haunting of Hill House out on Netflix if you're brave!
