Dean (6926 KP) rated Piranha 3D (2010) in Movies
Feb 22, 2018
Only watched the 3D version on DVD so far, some scenes look good and you can tell it was made and shot to be a 3D film. Some scenes looked more like a hologram though. I have to add the colours seemed a bit out at times .....barely noticed the blood which there is tons of!? Will watch again in 2D soon.
Otherwise it's a fun, very bloody, gory creature feature with some good SFX, plenty of hot girls including Kelly Brook, good soundtrack, some tongue in cheek humour and a decent cast! It's a little short at 78mins and the climax of the film wasn't exactly epic. If you like cool films that know their target audience, you'll enjoy this!

Dean (6926 KP) rated Saw IV (2007) in Movies
Aug 26, 2018
This is a very good horror film that keeps in the tradition of the other Saw films. For me this is probably the 2nd best of the first four films after the 1st. There is a lot more explanation into why Jigsaw had become what he was. This installment also reveals new plot lines linking the other films. It may be confusing for some, might be worth watching Saw 3 again shortly before watching this. This is due to quite a few flashbacks to the other films, characters and the fact that in the timeline of events most of this film overlaps with the 3rd film. Very gory in places as you expect but a better storyline than the last two films.

Gore fest
Not bad
I was a fan of the saw films such as the franchise is.
You know that the series is about, you know what to expect and what is likely to happen and this is no different..
It is well thought out and possibly better than some of the later films in the series but you do tend to wonder why the have revived the series... obviously the film companies coffers are running low and an established film franchise is a money maker...
All in all it is watchable and enjoyable, IF you don’t expect anything different or too unexpected from the originals and like gory films.

I enjoyed it
Fantasticland is a modern day Lord of the Flies, that focuses on a theme park. After a hurricane young employees of a theme park are trapped and forced to survive anyway they can.
The story is told from different perspectives of each character of how they survived and what happened. I liked the idea of the story being told in interviews. It showed how the events in the theme park changed each person. The character development was really good and the plot moved along at a great pace. It did have some gory moments but with context to show how desperate things got. I would recommend this book.

A good action adult film
Polar
This is definitely not for the faint of heart. This is a brutal but fantastic film. You just can’t turn away.
If you're not a fan of gratuitous, over-the-top violence, lengthy sex scenes, and gory detail, stay away from this movie.
If such things don't bother you, or you see such things as essential in a good action movie, Polar is the film for you! Evocative of Tarantino, Charlie's Angel's, and any number of violent, Hitman-style films, Polar earns its place among the classics, with gusto.
An aging hitman on the verge of retirement, our protagonist finds himself hunted by his former employers, they get more than they bargain for.

Gruesome, gory, deep
The first book of the series, introduces us to DI Jack Caffrey a young successful detective in the Met.

A thriller with some real chills. Returning to his home town for the first time in 25 years Paul is still haunted by the murder that occurred there in his childhood and with a copycat about he's not the only one finding it hard to forget the town's horrific past.
This is not a tale for the weak-stomached with some truly gory and creepy imagery. It's both well written by Alex North and the audiobook was a great listen (narrated by Hannah Arterton and John Heffernan.)
I did find the ending slightly anti-climatic but I think part of it was the build-up was just so good.
Thanks to Macmillan Audio, the author, and NetGalley for the copy.

LeftSideCut (3778 KP) rated House of Wax (2005) in Movies
Sep 3, 2021
Sure, House of Wax is uninhibited silliness, trashy, and so painfully mid 00s, but I think it's a fair comment to say it's an underrated movie, from an era of horror that I'm not personally too fond of.
It's full of constant nu-metal needle drops, awful dialogue, and very on-the-nose visual moments (looking at you, villain slicing through a conjoined-twin wax sculpture) but to its credit, it has an ambitious premise that's pulled off well, some solid and imaginative gory moments, and a pretty creepy boogeyman, and all this combined makes for a film that deserves more than just "is that the one with Paris Hilton in it?"
Give House of Wax another chance. It's dumb, but fun.

A good old fashioned revenge story (2 more)
The villains are brilliant
Music is very atmospheric
Was skeptical, but enjoyed it!
I was initially skeptical of this film, thinking it was going to be an all black cast just for the sake of it, but I was very wrong!
The film is really enjoyable, and what colour-orientated aspects to it worked really well (the "white town" made me chuckle when I saw it).
The principal cast are all excellent, and I actually found the group of villains to be the most enjoyable to watch (the train heist is great).
Gory, entertaining and often heartfelt, I'd recommend giving it a watch. There aren't any lulls, there are a few twists, and the action is really well-paced and choreographed.

Decent Horror
A slow burner but enjoyable creature, myth Horror. In a remote rundown town in Oregon a strange creature appears to be attacking local residents. It's very nicely shot and the locations add to the feel of the film. Quite a grim, run down, poor town that has long seen better days. Combined with large areas of remote woodland and mountains adding to the isolated feel. The main story takes the form of an old folk tale about a spirit taking the form of an animal and needing to feed.
The creature effects are good along with the gory makeup effects are both good. If you after a slow burner, errie horror that's a bit different to the norm check this out.
