If you love gothic, read this.
I had to read this for my English module at uni, and am really glad I did.
On the surface its really gothic and really creepy. Very well written and the author paints a great picture of someone going insane.
Underneath the surface, this is an attack on patriarchy in the enlightenment period. Knowing this makes it a completely different read, not so much gothic and more feminist and historic. There's a clear aim that to show the reader how enlightened men drive women insane.
On a side note, Charlotte gives us the first image of a creeping scary thing, way before we see this in horror movies in the 20th century.

A different take on the gothic
I had to read this for my uni course and was pleasantly surprised as to how much I enjoyed it. If you are looking to read something out with your norm, I can recommend Northanger Abbey.
It has a slow start, the main character Catherine can be infuriating, however, she is meant to be. You don't get to the gothic part until close to the end, it's interesting how Austen uses the gothic tropes to send a message to other novelists and critics of her time. Austen does this extremely well. When reading it, if you place it in the historic time it was written you will get a lot more from the story.
