Better Watch Out isn't just another unconventional Christmas movie to throw into the ever growing pile, no sir. As much as it sets itself up as another fun festive horror, it's actually possesses one hell of a mean streak, and is genuinely uncomfortable to watch for a huge chunk of it's runtime.
The basic premise revolves around 12 year old Luke. When his parents head out for the evening, his babysitter Ashley is hired one last time before she moves away from the area. Not long into the evening, weird shit starts happening, and it's soon apparent that the two of them and Luke's friend Garrett are all falling victim to a home invasion, and they have to fight to survive the night. Without going into spoiler territory, the plot isn't quite this straightforward, and there's a midway twist that gives us a properly sadistic main antagonist.
This is all portrayed superbly by its main cast. Levi Miller is great as Luke, and the other main cast are played by The Visit alumni Olivia DeJonge, and Ed Oxenbould (thankfully not constantly rapping this time around). The three of them absolutely carry this film to it's bloody climax.
The gore isn't too shabby, and is done fairly tastefully all things considered. When shit starts to hit the fan, we are treated to some genuinely tense moments, and a couple of jump scares that have that rare honour of feeling somewhat earned.
All in all, Better Watch Out is a decent slice of Christmas horror. It's different, it's clever, and has a fucked up Home Alone kind of vibe for good measure. Worth checking out!

All action no character
An action packed book that just wasn’t for me. I can imagine enjoying this as a film with non stop action scenes and childhood flashbacks but as a book it just failed to engage me.
Sleeper 13 follows the character of Aydin who as a young boy is placed in “The Farm.” Trained to be an elite Jihadi fighter his world is turned upside down again with the realisation that those who have trained him are responsible for the death of his sister. Plunging head on into a hell for leather revenge tale we follow Aydin around the world while getting a glimpse into his world growing up. Meanwhile Aydin and his fellow jihadi brothers cell is being tracked down by the secret service and in particular Rachael who will not let red tape get in her way.
I really wasn’t engaged by either Aydin or Rachael. Aydin managed a full 180 in a very quick time with very little covering him having any kind of crisis of conscience and for an elite Jihadi we spent a lot of time covering why he was the least skilled. Rachael meanwhile seems way too eager to break rules and go against direct orders at the drop of the hat, how she ever progressed in any organisation with such little discipline made little sense to me. For all the action I just didn’t feel invested.
It’s not often I don’t fly through a book when I’m on holiday but this one I found I struggled to keep picking back up. Interesting concept just not for me.

Story: The Pelican Brief starts when two Supreme Court Justices are assassinated, bring the country to a stand still in shock. Law student Darby Shaw (Roberts) puts together a theory of who was behind the assassinations, which she presents to her boyfriend and professor Thomas (Shepard), one theory that has turned his head.
After the theory is presented to the people investigating, Darby and Tom start getting targeted, when journalist friend of one of the victims Gray Grantham (Washington) start investigating a bigger conspiracy going on within the government, one that will put both their lives in danger.
Thoughts on The Pelican Brief
Characters – Darby is a law student having an affair with her professor, after the assassinations, she comes up with a theory about who was behind them, which sees her become a target for the people behind it, she doesn’t know who to trust seeing anybody she does get killed, her last resort is Gray. Gray is a journalist that has worked with the victims in the past, he is willing to dig for the truth, he does become Darby’s last resort and works with her to expose the truth which will become the biggest story of his career. Thomas Callahan is the connection between Darby and the people involved, he is a professor, with her theory interesting him at his own risk. We do go through many different political figures in search for the truth here, each one has their own agenda and could be involved.
Performances – Julia Roberts in the leading role is strong as she gives us a strong independent figure that has been running for her life trying to expose the truth. Denzel Washington was a growing star at the time of release, here he makes us believe that he is a star in the role which is filled with the determination and skill to start ahead of the game. The rest of the cast are all strong with them each getting the moments to shine with them all having the importance to the story.
Story – The story follows a law student and journalist that must team up to investigate the assassinations of the two members of the supreme court that puts both their lives in danger as it could bring the political system down. This story does give us plenty of swerves along the way as it does keep us guessing just to where everything will be going, it does show us how a political system will be used to gain an advantage and can be used to cover up anything that will incriminate them. The idea of the cover up shows just how corruption can effect so many lives and is ready to be exposed.
Crime/Mystery – The crime side of the film shows just how the laws can be bent to help the people who want to make the most money, how much they will do to cover up their secrets and how corrupt they will become. The mystery side of the film show just how the corruption needs to be investigated, how far up the chain it could go too.
Settings – The film is set in a couple of major cities in America Washington and New York mostly, which show just how the big companies will use the political power to make the most money.
Scene of the Movie – The video.
That Moment That Annoyed Me – It is too long, with too many characters at times.
Final Thoughts – This is a political thriller that does keep you guessing, it shows how far up the chain corruption can go and how covering it up can be the only option.

We all have our favorite Adam Sandler movies. There are the fans of The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates and there’s the loyal camp who can quote Happy Gilmore or Big Daddy verbatim. You hear the name Adam Sandler’s and you think goofy, lovable guy. Dependably funny and quotable, from the mid-90’s on, he was the go-to comedian when we looked for an easy laugh. Of late, with the growing list of popular movies under his belt, when you think goofy, lovable funny guy, another name comes up: Seth Rogan. In “Funny People” you get them both.
Sandler plays George Simmons, a popular comedian who’s diagnosed with a fatal disease. Playing a comedian is hardly a stretch for Sandler, but for one whose dramatic turns can be counted on one hand, he plays the stricken man who’s suddenly face to face with his immortality quite convincingly. Rogan is Ira Wright, a desperate young comic who’s still vying for stage time at the local comedy club. George, perhaps recognizing a bit of himself or seeing a glimmer of comedic genius in Ira after catching his act, hires Ira to write for him.
Ira goes from writer and personal assistant/confidante to opening act as he helps George deal with his illness. He encourages the veteran comedian to reconnect with his compatriots in the business, opening the film to a parade of old faces from the stand-up circuit. George’s reflections on his life eventually lead him back to a lost love, Laura, played by Leslie Mann. Amidst the funny, laugh-out-loud scenes, are some believably tender moments, not just between Mann and Sandler but also, oddly enough, Sandler and Rogan.
Directing the comedic duo is writer/director Judd Apatow, who gave Rogan that growing list of successful movies after first casting him in The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Sandler could certainly use some of Apatow’s Midas-like touch after his recent string of marginal films. With a strong supporting cast of Jonah Hill and Jason Schwartzman who play Ira’s roommates Leo and Mark and Eric Bana, Laura’s husband, the movie is in turns hilarious and puzzling. The strong storyline of a veteran comedian taking a novice comic under his wings gets lost when George pursues a second chance with an unhappily married Laura. What could’ve been a touching passing of the torch tale is confused by an annoying love triangle. When the movie returns its focus to George and Ira, it’s saved, just barely, by the fact that we’re still watching two of comedy’s goofy, lovable funny guys.
