This is the story about a young girl, second-generation Irish, Francie Nolan, growing up around 1912 in a tenement. The mother, Katie, works cleaning apartments to bring home enough money for food and very little else. The father, Frankie, is a singing waiter, but when he finds work, he ends up drinking most of his wages. He's kind to Francie, but he's an unreliable alcoholic. Her brother, Neely, is Katie's favorite, and is a typical brother to Francie. He's mostly off trying to be tough with the other neighborhood boys. Francie spends her time reading, with her goal to read through all the authors in her neighborhood library, and goes alphabetically.

This book was quite enjoyable! I loved that we were able to follow friends throughout the years and all the trials and tribulations that come with growing up.

Sam, Suzie, and Bella are great friends and the book is written in such a way that I was able to put myself in their shoes and relive the woes of childhood.

The Grown Ups was very slow to start for me, I wasn't loving it at first and even toyed with the idea of putting it down and walking away. I stuck with it and I ended up relating pretty well with the characters.

I liked this book a lot and I will be recommending it to friends.

I liked how the character's grew (0 more)
I enjoyed this book even though it went from past to present. Some books can make it difficult to keep on track but this was easy to keep up with.
I was hooked from the first chapter and there were so many twists and turns it kept me hooked.
The author really gave me an insight into each character and the journey they all went on growing up.
I felt so bad for the characters and what they had to go through especially with the twist at the end. It was heartbreaking but it felt good at the end. The characters opened up.
I think the audience for this book is twenties and over but no specific gender. It is for people who like a good twist and a good crime book.
