The 80s were a great time for movies and in particular a very violent and at some times black humoured movie from director Paul Verhoeven, yes folks, I'm talking about the original RoboCop.

It's the film that a lot of us still love today, with its story of a good cop (Peter Weller) who is murdered by criminals, in possibly one of the most gruesome cop killings in a movie in the 80s, who is then pieced back together as an unstoppable crime-fighting cyborg, who is tormented by the memory of his death and in turn goes out for revenge.

Could've been so much better
This could've been a fantastic dark and gruesome tale, and although parts of this were quite creepy (always the scenes with the hollows), I feel like Tim Burton has really missed the mark with this one. The film only has a very vague resemblance to the book, and it's very irritating that they've changed so many characters and so many scenes for no reason. Some of the acting and script seemed stilted and not well executed at times, and the pace was far too slow. The effects were good though and it did have potential, it's just a shame Burton couldn't pull it off.

Okay mid-period Laurel and Hardy short. Stan and Ollie are hired by regular antagonist Walter Long to help kidnap men to crew his allegedly-haunted ship; perhaps inevitably, they end up press-ganging themselves. Better not mention the ghost to the captain...
About as close to over-plotted as you can get with a L&H movie; some good stuff near the start but it gets a bit busy as it goes on - too much story, not enough slapstick. Concludes by recycling the (slightly gruesome) closing gag from the same year's Going Bye-Bye! Has its moments, but not as many as some other films from the boys.

Finding humour in difficult times
This is a book that tells it like it is: the long hours, no sleep, the volume of work, the responsibility, the gory, gruesome bits, the humour, the sadness and the stress. We take for granted that the NHS and our doctors will always be there, but after reading this book, I find myself with even more respect for the doctors and nurses in our hospitals, and the care they give us even when they’re tired and stressed.
This is very funny though, and I think a lot of humour is probably used by doctors - whatever gets them through their long shifts!

Introducing Kate Winslet!
Before Peter Jackson was instructing us on the ways of Bilbo and Gollum, he introduced us to Pauline and Juliet, two young girls who form an intense, provocative and somewhat delusional relationship.

They become fast friends and construct a fantasy world where both of them can live whilst they make some gruesome decisions about their own parents. Throughout the film you are unsure what you are viewing is real of part of the dream.

I loved this film for its portrayals of the young girls and the lengths they will go to remain together even after their volatile relationship is discovered.

Campy creepy fun
I had never seen this horror classic until last night. For some reason it had always escaped me.

When teenager Mike stumbles upon some gruesome happenings at a funeral, he decides to investigate. He discovers the mysterious "Tall Man" whom he battles with his brother to see who survives.

It certainly has the low budget film look with shoddy lighting and the usual low budget effects, but there are enough creepy images and those cool flying metal spheres to keep you entertained throughout.

Since I have just purchased the Phantasm 5 pack, I definitely see more Phantasm in my immediate future.

Oh, this book! If you love crime, facts, gruesome stuff, this is the book for you!
Not at all what I imagined it would be. I figured it would be facts about the hospital, possible interviews with staff etc. however, due to very limited information being freely given on the hospital itself, the book turned out the most fantastically real read.
Enter the patients. To fill the pages there is chapter after chapter of patients and their crimes. Facts that keep the pages turning until your eyes cant stay open any longer. Cannot recommend this book highly enough. Absolutely fantastic, start to finish!
