Downtown Train by Tom Waits

Track

"Downtown Train was the first song that I remember hearing by Tom Waits. It’s a great song. It also said everything that I wanted to say. I was 17 years old and I realised that I was never going to be a great singer because I had this weird voice, so I started looking at all the guys who had weird voices: Bob Dylan, Joe Strummer and Tom Waits. I aligned myself with those guys and said, ‘OK, let me see what they’re doing. What can I do to add to it?’ Tom Waits really put the icing on the cake for me because he was all about the lyrics and the delivery – nothing else mattered. He showed me that if you mean it enough then you could do anything you want. I loved his hobo dress sense as well. He looked like all the things that I was doing at the time because I was working on cars and I would wear the jeans and the boots and the blue shirt. We’d wipe our hands on the shirts because they were thick and you could wash them and the grease would come out; we’d wear the jeans so when you were leaning on the floor your knees wouldn’t rip; and we’d wear the boots so if you dropped the carburettor it wouldn’t break your toes. So there was a purpose for everything, and that’s why I sought of had a connection with these guys. I felt like Tom Waits was my friend, and I went down the rabbit hole after discovering him."

Primal Instinct is the first book in the Prowlers series, and we dive straight in with Kenzie. She is being blackmailed to do all sorts of nefarious acts, just to keep her sister alive. She isn't proud of what she's done or doing, but will do whatever it takes to keep her sister alive. Jaxx is a born shifter, complete with self-filling glyph that shows just how much humanity he has left. Here's a hint - it isn't much. The only thing that will save him from going rogue is to find his fated mate.

This story is full of twists and turns, with bad guys who are evil and yet you have sympathy toward them. Then there are good guys who do bad things, plus bad guys who appear all bad (I'm reserving judgment on them though!). With dodgy companies, weres going missing, blackmailing brothers, a new player for Kenzie when she isn't sure if she is friend or foe, there is an awful lot going on in here. It all works though.

It is a fast-paced story, and if you're anything like me, you will find it hard to put down. With no editing or grammatical errors that I noticed, I thoroughly enjoyed this first foray in the Prowlers world. Absolutely recommended by me.

* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and the comments here are my honest opinion. *

For the last two and a half decades, the first-person shooter has been a mainstay in the video game world. Never shying away from a bit of controversy, they're typically games about killing hundreds of bad guys in sequence on a Rambo-like rampage through levels.

But shooters aren't all bloody rampages without meaning, style, or substance. In case you're not too well-versed in the genre, or just need some good recommendations, here are a selection:

The Telegraph have put together a list of the best shooting games, from the bombastic gorefests to smaller indie affairs.

I love the world Sarah creates! Fae, witches, demons, a prince, assassins, and magic! Throne of Glass is the start to this amazing series and it takes a little to get into it because there is so much you need to know about her past and all the characters and the world. The series gets better with each book you read.

The Big Bang Theory is one of my favorite shows. I discovered this show later than most, I think about 5 years ago. I thought being called Big Bang Theory that they would talk about evolution a lot, and others. But I was surprised that they didnt really at all. I love the partnership between all of the guys, and the teasing back and forth amongst friends.

Strangers: Prey at Night (2018)

At many points this movie feels like a Lifetime original movie. The characters consistently make decisions that are beyond stupid, stupidity that can't be reasoned away by the "in-the-moment" fear of the situation. It's like they have no sense of self preservation. They run around screaming out for others when there are bad guys actively looking for them, and don't shoot the person that is trying to kill them when they have them at gunpoint.

Surprised you gave it a 4 it was awful even the strangers act like they dont give a crap if they die. A family that deserved to die with their stupidity. And Im pretty sure if the poloce get a call about murderers they would send more than 1.

I received this book from NetGalley for review.

A thoroughly enjoyable read. The story has a good pace for the designed reader age, not overly complicated and yet still catches you into reading more. The characters are interesting, rounded and entertaining ... even the bad guys had a reason for being so. The cover art is gorgeous and a perfect front page for the story.

I would like to read more of Millie's future adventures with magic.
