I'm a bit picky with my historical reads. But since this would be my first full length mm historical romance, I thought I'd give it a go. And it turned into something I really enjoyed. It was paranormal and action packed and romantic. I couldn't ask for more, really.

I really liked both Griffin and Whyborne. Griffin was the sort of bad boy of the Victorian era I would never have guessed existed and Whyborne was the smart, bookish type that liked to be invisible to everyone around him. Except that wasn't possible with Griffin. He noticed him and accepted him and it was kinda sweet.

The storyline was very engaging and I was continually cheering my two guys on to figure it out and to get that person or other. And at the end I almost cried. I cant go into details without spoiling it but this is not some boring, average historical fiction based mm romance. It's very good.

Good but could be better
So a film that caused some controversy when it was released, with gangs turning up to cinemas with knives resulting in it being pulled from most cinemas. The irony in that the film tries to highlight some causes of it and how stupid it is to get mixed up in. It does feel a lot like the recent Top Boy series, although not as good. Also featuring some of the main actors from that. Also a lot like @Kidulthood (2006) Some of the characters do just come across as very dumb and easily manipulated. Sadly some guys in gangs get caught up with some misguided idea of loyalty. It really didn't need the rap cameos from Rapman though, they just feel out of place. Overall the story is interesting and makes for a good film, but it will feel like you've seen it all before. It's not up to the quality of similar films.

Super-slick espionage thriller from Hitchcock's late-50s imperial phase is one of the greatest pieces of escapist cinema ever made. Hapless ad executive Cary Grant finds himself mistaken for a secret agent and pursued across America by the bad guys and the cops, and forced to become a non-existent adventurer. Sparkling dialogue and effortless suspense is intercut with iconic set-pieces (the crop duster attack, the chase across the faces of Mount Rushmore).

Hitchcock makes it all look bafflingly easy, assisted by a very smart script and some charismatic performers (Grant is perhaps a touch too old - he was 55 at the time - but makes up for it with sheer star power). Maybe the plot doesn't completely hang together and the title has no relation to the story, but who cares? A deservedly enduring film, perhaps in more ways than one: add a touch more grit and some globetrotting to this recipe and you'd have something that looks very much like the formula for a Bond movie. Superb entertainment.
