Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2440 KP) rated Tenth Stone (A.D. Chronicles, #10) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
The Thoene's bring back characters from earlier books to retell the story of the Prodigal Son. However, they turn their historical fiction into fantasy and kill the climax of what should have been a powerful book. I'm debating whether I will continue to read them or not.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2440 KP) rated For the Love of Mike (Molly Murphy Mysteries, #3) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Searching for missing woman and working undercover in the sweat shops of 1901 New York is enough to keep Molly very busy. Can she find the woman while also forming an early union? The historical detail, characters, and plot all come together for a great book.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2440 KP) rated The Last Musketeer (The Last Musketeer, #1) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Greg Rich finds himself sucked back through time to early 1600's Paris where he must unite teenage musketeers to save his parents. A kids book that combines elements of fantasy with historical fiction, I enjoyed it, although I did find the set up a bit too long.

Charlotte Cartlidge (22 KP) rated Prince of Hearts in Books
Aug 18, 2018
Steampunk Romance
not your typical heroine, Aline, is clever witty and so relatable. She doesn’t need nor want the oh so dashing Russian prince Sasha Romanov coming to her rescue every time something goes wrong. A little something for everyone, with historical character, steamy romance, vampires and automaton puppies. I read all of the Elders and Welders Chronicles and Margaret leaves you craving more. Fingers crossed there is more to come.
The Craggus (360 KP) rated BlacKkKlansman (2018) in Movies
Sep 12, 2018
Spike Lee uses black comedy to showcase white horror in all its grotesquerie. BlacKkKlansman (2018) #Review
There’s a deep-rooted discomfort at the heart of “BlacKkKlansman” and it’s the fact that instead of being a historical, true story poking cautionary fun at the ignorance of the past, it instead feels like a howl of furious irony at the recidivism of modern-day America. The Craggus (360 KP) rated Colette (2018) in Movies
Jan 10, 2019
Colette (2019) sees Keira Knightly ghostwriting for Willy while enjoying fanny by gaslight.
Taking a few liberties with the Libertine life and times of celebrated French novelist Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, “Colette” is a sumptuous and sensual but occasionally aimless and indulgent biopic that’s perhaps a little too interested in signposting the contemporary resonances than in providing a wider historical context to its subject’s life...

Deborah (162 KP) rated England's Queens: From Boudica to Elizabeth of York in Books
Dec 19, 2018
Interesting overview from the early and mythical queens right up to Elizabeth of York.
Overall I enjoyed it, but the later chapters I found disappointing. Probably because my own historical knowledge is stronger there, but I thought the later chapters were a rehash of something from books a few years out of date and a few things were plain wrong (e.g. Elizabeth Woodville did not have a big funeral).
