In this story, we meet with War, the second of the Horsemen. He is still wrapped in guilt at the role he played in the destruction of a neighbouring tribe when he was alive. He was murdered by a survivor of that village, and he let it happen, thinking that he deserved it. Russell is a modern-day soldier, serving in Afghanistan, when he is wounded and left for dead. Death shows up and tells him to hang on, help is on the way. War then arrives, on Death's instructions, and feels the need to help this individual. We have a quick reunion with Aldo, before Russell gets taken to a hospital in Germany. He is sent back to war far too soon and ends up having a mental breakdown due to circumstances.
The PTSD is handled incredibly well in this book, and it doesn't shy away from the grim reality of war. Both Russell and War have guilt issues to work through, and together, they help each other. Their relationship, although fast, still has time to develop.
We get a few extra snippets in this book, including the fact that the horses can speak in the world between worlds. Death is as intriguing and cryptic as ever, although I still love him.
A very different series that I am thoroughly enjoying. Definitely recommended for anyone who wants a slightly different read.

The PTSD is handled incredibly well in this book, and it doesn't shy away from the grim reality of war. Both Russell and War have guilt issues to work through, and together, they help each other. Their relationship, although fast, still has time to develop.
We get a few extra snippets in this book, including the fact that the horses can speak in the world between worlds. Death is as intriguing and cryptic as ever, although I still love him.
A very different series that I am thoroughly enjoying. Definitely recommended for anyone who wants a slightly different read.

Autry is one trouble maker who is in big trouble with one little good girl. Then all of sudden out of nowhere comes little boy who worms his way into Autry's heart. What are they to do when Dylan foster parents can no longer keep him, Dylan needs a new home; can Beth and Autry work together to give this boy the family they all need or will it be all over because Beth cannot see the man that Autry really is. Can one good little girl be enough to make Autry want to be the man he has always wanted to be?
This is my second Kadie Scott book and I am over the moon for her group of characters that make up the Hill Family books. Her easy writing style and how she weaves her tales make you need a little recovery time after finishing her tales. If you are thinking oh typical western romance you would be way off, Yes, it is a romance based on cowboys and ranching but her story goes beyond the horses and cowboy hats but actually to the characters of her stories so you know who they truly are beyond the story. I recommend this book for anyone looking for a funny, read with romance, laughs and adorable cowboy or two.

What happens when two families, who have experienced tragedy and loss, and are from very different backgrounds are thrown together?
It is 1845, the Morgans are Texans through and through. They raise the famous Morgan Horses on their ranch, the Running M Ranch and have fought hard and sacrificed much to be the successful ranchers that they are. The Fleischer family have traveled from Germany and just arrived in Texas. This foreign land has taken much from them in the short time they have been here. Jud Morgan carries bitterness and distrust for the Germans who have begun to overtake "his" Texas. But his eyes are opened to the Lord's love for all people when he accepts the friendship of the Fleischers. Especially when the eldest daughter, Wande, catches his eye. It becomes apparent that the Lord brought these two families together. To work and live side by side to survive the untamed land of the "Lone Star State".
I couldn't put this book down! Depending on the personal events of our family, it usually takes me a little while to complete a book, no matter how interesting it is. But with this book, I couldn't help it. The dishes piled up, the laundry went unwashed and I read every second I could. Darlene Franklin captured my attention from the start. I always enjoy reading about this particular time era, when families are venturing into unknown land to build a new life. And Lone Star Trail did not disappoint. I look forward to reading the rest of the Texas Trails series and continuing the Morgan family adventure!

This is the second book in Quinn's Rome series, but confusingly the action here takes place chronologically before the first one. The setting for this book is 69AD - the Year of the Four Emperors, so plenty of plotting and back stabbing all round.
Many of the characters in this novel did exist historically. Obviously the further back in time you go, the less information there is generally available about what actually went on, which I suppose is a good thing for the historical novelist! The novel centres around four female cousins; two sisters and their two first cousins to be precise. The sisters really did exist, although more is known about one than the other (this is clear when you have read the book and read the historical note at the end). The cousins are invented to drive the plot along; Lollia starts off almost like a WAG - seemingly a bit empty headed and marrying whoever is in favour that month, but she does develop into a more likeable, rounded character. While Diana is difficult to dislike she is a pretty flat character; she's beautiful and completely obsessed with horses and 'The Reds' chariot racing team - a bit like a football bore today I suppose! The sister-in law, Tullia, is another very one-dimensional character, probably best summed up as 'fishwife'.
Many events are based on historical fact, but there are some bits, like the cousins escaping from Rome, that seems a bit unrealistic.
Overall, I found this quite a quick (for a 400 page novel) and entertaining read, but I suspect that like Quinn's Mistress of Rome, I may well be pushed to remember any plot details in a few months time and I probably wouldn't read it again.
