David McK (3918 KP) rated Jeeves and the Yule-tide Spirit in Books

Jan 28, 2019

Short free-to-download (form Amazon) Jeeves story, in which Bertie Wooster is off to Skelding Hall to stay with Lady Wickham and her daughter Bobbie, the latest of Wooster's desires in a change of plans from their intended visit to Monte Carlo

Also staying are Roderick and Tuppy Glossop, leading Bertie to (attempt to) get his own back on Tuppy for a previous slight, with his (or Bobbie's) plan involving a hot water bottle and a darning needle ...

Needless to say, things go wrong once again, and Jeeves ends up both saving the day and the trip to Monte Carlo ...

David McK (3918 KP) rated The Deeds of the Disturber (Amelia Peabody, #5) in Books

Jan 30, 2019

The fifth Amelia Peabody novel which, in a change of setting, actually takes place in and around London rather than Egypt (even though it still deals with Egyptology).

There's also a 2001 film called 'The Mummy Returns': having now read this, I can see more than a few parallels between that movie and this! British museum? Check. Historical(ish) setting? Check. Husband and wife team? Check. Precocious son? Check. Attempted Egyptian ritual/curse? Check (yet again).

OK, so the novel doesn't have the undead wandering around, nor a hot-air balloon, but still enough ...

Smart, Sexy, Action Packed

Although I am a huge fan of hot sexy badass chicks I found the flashback sequences top distracting to truly enjoy the film. I understand the purpose of it, demonstrating a truly brilliant effect of multiple scenes laying over each other meant to deceive, holding true the spy game, they were also distracting as one had to piece together what was happening quickly and by then the scene was over. However the acting was truly brilliant and the scenes were beautiful to behold.
