The Great Flood of 1913 is perhaps the biggest disaster that no one has heard about. It impacted fourteen states and was not only a flood but also a tornado outbreak. The impact was felt for a long time through many communities. This is a well researched and constructed narractive of the events during the disaster of 1913. It not only adequately explains the scientific and historic aspects of this event but really focuses on the humanistic angle. By telling the stories of the people that were effected by this event it makes it very readable as well as informative.

Almost perfect selection
This would have received the full ten stars if it didn't include Margaret Thatcher and play down the anti-Semitism shown by Nancy Astor.

Absolutely brilliant otherwise, incredibly informative and interesting - and while I did think for a while there was a heavy influence from the Suffragette circle - I believe it was still well deserved. Hats off to Jenni Murray for bringing many of these hidden women to the forefront. And while there was a lack of women of colour, it seems to be the general standpoint for now that they too are invisible.

Clash of cultures within one civilisation
A fascinating look into how Russia has essentially used contemporary and western culture to reconstruct the same Soviet system. It's not so much an evolution but adaptation to bolster their former glory.

Peter Pomerantsev is a veteran reporter for Russia, and his tongue and cheek yet informative look into the country is engaging, concerning and at times just plain insane.

The book itself meanders through a variety of topics, mostly based on the writer's experiences of working on various television programmes for state sponsored networks, therefore doesn't strictly stick to the nitty gritty political system.

Great on Commutes
If you have a long journey, download a selection of these and you are set to travel. There are a wide selection of bizarre, interesting, silly and practical questions, with enough humour and information to keep you occupied for your trip.

Sometimes they do laugh a little too much at their own remarks but as the show is so entertaining, this isn't too much of a problem and you just find yourself thinking "oh shut up" rather than getting annoyed with it...

Fun and informative
This app allows you to check how big you baby is according to fruit (everyone does fruit) animals (a little more unusual) and sweets (who doesn't want to compare their baby to sweets )
Every day an article is uploaded which relates to where you are in pregnancy.
Articles are written by a variety of people
The app also allows you to save articles, make notes and keep track of things like your weight.
It may not be the most comprehensive app out there but I’m enjoying what it has to offer.

Thoroughly enjoyable podcast that covers all of my favourite subjects, i.e. true crime, cults, cryptids, UFOs, ghosts... I've listened for years and still look forward to each new release. Marcus is a master when it comes to compiling each show and provides strong, clear narrative throughout. Most of the time they successfully strike the right balance between serious and fun. The only downside for me is Henry going off at too much of a tangent sometimes! Finally the hosts are all loving dog-dads, and mental health advocates, which just makes me like them even more.

White Trash: The 400-Year Untold History of Class in America
White Trash: The 400-Year Untold History of Class in America

"Undergirding so much of the discourse surrounding resentment in America right now is the conversation about race. While the notion of “blackness” is often at the forefront of such discussions, the idea of “whiteness” is frequently left unexamined. In her surprising new book, Isenberg goes into the history of how the “white trash” identity is directly related to social caste and economic realities that are perpetually unacknowledged in American castings of itself, its character and its history. White Trash is at once informative, painful and enlightening in how complex our obsession with social-standing-by-virtue-of-color has evolved."

Stuff you Missed in History Class is all the things I wish I would have actually learned in school. From the stories you think you have already heard to things you would not think to look into this podcast covers them all. In the coverage, the overviews are often more informative then hours in the classroom. I love listening to Tracy and Holly tell the well-researched and well thought outlines full of what is promised history. This podcast leaves out most of the personal feelings of the hosts, which is very nice as well. Episode suggestions: New England Vampire Panic and Building Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion.

Well that was enlightening - I never knew what any of the words meant - I had seen a video online where individuals label people as what they think they are - and I had no idea what anything meant, this was quite informative - though they now need a book about ALL individuals, because there were some words used in that video I still have no idea what they mean - a guide like this for all genders would be superb. The graphics were cute and the "voices" in it were also well done and thought out. A great GN for those wanting to learn a bit about gender neutrality!
