I'm In Love
I just wasn't expecting much from this film at all. We put it on for my little girl because she loves superheroes, and I honestly thought "here we go, some strong woman feminist statement, how cliched". Oh how wrong I was.

I was absolutely enthralled. The "wide-eyed innocence" of Gal Godot when she ventured out into the wider world could have been so overdone, but I thought she played it perfectly. Her character was one you could sympathise with and care for - so much so, I may have even shed a tear or two for her, which was something I certainly didn't expect (I kind of wanted to hate her because I expected the film to be so rubbish!).

It's definitely a film I'd happily watch again. I think I enjoyed it more than my daughter or husband!!

One of those enduringly great movies that captures the spirit of the time in which it was made. A pair of outlaws discover that the free-and-easy west in which they've lived is being overtaken by the modern world. What do two men do when there just isn't a place for them any more?

A shamelessly nostalgic and bittersweet reflection on the loss of innocence, not least in the western genre itself; the film is unapologetically romantic about the activities of a couple of bandits, but they are written and played with such charm and conviction that you accept them utterly and keenly feel the loss of everything that they represent. Great performances from the three leads, and a script filled with quotable lines and memorable moments - not sure it's strictly speaking a classic western in the traditional sense, but certainly a classic film.

"Robert Mitchum stars in his signature role as the demonic preacher Harry Powell. The great actor Charles Laughton’s only work as a director is a horrifying fable about the loss of innocence and the darkness barely contained beneath the veneer of American pastoral life. It’s a one-of-a-kind movie. There’s nothing like it. Powerful, beautiful, darkly funny. Visually stunning. Both expressionistic and harshly realistic. It’s an American fever dream that I don’t think was equaled until David Lynch launched Blue Velvet into an unsuspecting Reagan-era public three decades later. The disc features Charles Laughton Directs “The Night of the Hunter,” a deconstruction of the film featuring outtakes and behind-the-scenes footage that enhances the experience of an already perfect film in ways unimaginable. Compiled by the UCLA Film and Television Archive, it’s a special feature as good as the film itself."

More lowest-common-denominator farce from the British film industry of yore. A con man who specialises in disguises, trying to locate the big score he and his dead partner made, must track down a group of women each of whom has vital clues to its whereabouts tattooed on her backside, while being pursued by the Mafia and London gangsters.

Nearly as horrendous as it sounds: some of these films make late-period Carry Ons look quite sophisticated. The plot takes a long time to get going and doesn't end up reaching anywhere worth the trip, despite the presence of various familiar faces from film and TV of the period. Has a weird sort of innocence to it despite all the smut, and Emery is a good enough comic to raise a few laughs even from material as thin and questionable as this. But, in general, oh dear.
