"I think this song is fun and sort of ridiculous, it's bombastic and big. There's so much reverb on ‘True Love Leaves No Traces’, it's crazy. He’s on the record cover with the women and he called it Death of a Ladies' Man! It's so beautiful and it's very well written, but it's kind of through this filter that you can't help but just kind of laugh loud. “There’s that song called ‘Memories’ where he sings “Your naked body...” and it’s just ridiculous; it's playful and fun in a way that only Leonard Cohen really knew how to be. If you listen to some of his interviews he's such a poetic man and he knows exactly how to say whatever he wants to say. Sometimes he chooses to say funny things and that record is kind of like that to me. “When you discover albums like this, you're like, 'There's actually really great songs in here, the production is insane, but what he's saying is really cool.' He was in his fifties at that point; he was drinking tea"

"Another imperfect perfect film that came slithering into my late-adolescent consciousness at just the right time. I was a disciple by the end of the opening titles (alone worth the price of admission). This thing is a bath of Cronenberg’s cold, polite, Torontonian style, and thus makes the story’s insanity that much more insane—the form of the movie pressure-cooking the content. And what better way to dramatically illustrate this repression explosion than a scene wherein Dr. Icy Veins himself, Jeremy Irons, pounces across an operating table in a spasm of drug withdrawal, belly flopping onto his unconscious patient to rip off her mask and suck anesthetic gas. This is a film featuring twin prescription-drug-addicted gynecologists dressed like Star Wars Imperial Guards who use H. R. Giger–esque, Josef Mengele–level–scary surgical instruments to operate on the “abnormal genitalia” of women they mistake for mutants. Now, if that’s not one for the whole family, well, I don’t know what is! (See Peter Greenaway’s A Zed & Two Noughts for obvious inspiration.)"

Super insane when you think about how an actual person was capable of making something this impeccable. Earth-shattering romance with very little frills, works as well as it does in part because Jonze - seasoned craftsman that he is - refuses to cloud the central dynamic(s) with overbearing "hey it's the future everybody look" winking nor random tech overanalyzing which usually bog down these types of films and take away from what works. It's easy to forget that acting can be this perfect - from the seismic Phoenix lead performance to Johansson's heart-wrenching and constantly evolving vocal presence. And it's nice to see a technology-oriented future-set film that doesn't dive into annoying 'The State of Things' preachiness or look like a grodey 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝘙𝘶𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳 rustbucket bootleg. In short, it never lets its story take a backseat to obnoxious gimmicks, ever - so everything is allowed to breathe. Wish it didn't spoil the final frame of the goddamned movie on the back of the DVD case, but otherwise holy fucking shit the waterworks were turned UP on this one.
