A dark epic fairytale
This captivating fantasy is set in the frozen north of Russia in the 13th century, and used Russian myths and fairy tales as inspiration.

At the centre of the novel is the family of a local Lord, in particular the headstrong youngest daughter Vasya who is gifted with 'second sight'. The existence of the community is threatened when a dark power in the forests begins to wake up, just as the villagers start to turn away from the household spirits who've protected them, in favour of a charismatic new priest.

The Russian setting adds interest and mystique and the protagonist Vasya is fantastically outspoken and scrappy. The plot is easy to follow despite the odd Russian word. It truly is a compelling read.

The first in a planned trilogy, Raven: Blood Eye is set during the early days of the Viking incursion into what would later become known as England. Pretty much the entire novel centres around one such such fictional raid: before, during and after the said event, with the subseqent sequels planning to 'open out' the Viking world.

If I had to compare it to other similar novels I've read, I would probably have to place it somewhere in the gap between Bernard Cornwell's (an author, incidentally, who Giles Kristian acknowledges as being part of his inspiration) series on Alfred the Great and Tim Severin's Viking books: not quite as polished as the former, nor as scholarly as the latter. Still an enjoyable enough read, though!

Re-writing the formula
Sequel to the MASSIVE Wii U hit, Super Mario Maker. Here is a new one for the Switch. Handful of new mechanics, most of the building mechanics are available from the story. And while the game has its own tutorial, the NEW Story Mode helps you learn in a different way.

Peach's Castle is destroyed. Complete premade levels to help rebuild it. And each one give you a unique look at one of the mechanics. Use it for inspiration.

Great addition to the Switch library. If you like Mario games... why not help the community make their own?

This book is a modern adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion. I was very excited when I heard about this book as Persuasion is my favorite of her novels, thank you to Touch My Spine Book Reviews for turning me onto this book! I loved seeing these characters come to life in a new light. I thought the setting was interesting and worked very well in adapting it into a modern time. I must say though that my favorite parts of the book were where it diverged from its source material and made something new. It was certainly successful in taking its inspiration from Austen but also did a great job of creating something interesting and unique. This is a fun romance story that I would definitely recommend.

I love love love this book. The story follows a writer in the aftermath of war torn London. She needs inspiration for her latest article or novel when the answer lands on her doorstep in the shape of a letter from Guernsey. She follows the tale of their literary society and how it got them through the war. The only question is why hasn't Elizabeth come home.

What an amazing story and really highlights the horrible life people had to live through during the occupation. Rightfully this was made into a film which is still good but when you read the book your find out so much more about the characters and their lives.

A must read for anyone who likes history.
