Mental horror. What was marketed as a routine goofy comedy ended up being this fucking monster of intense, bleak, hyper-abusive, bloody torment that still has hard laughs to spare. Outside of its tidy ending which wraps things up a bit too quickly (that I have good and bad things to say about) it's as good as 𝘎𝘦𝘵 𝘖𝘶𝘵 in weaving the seemingly intrinsically violent divisiveness of American politics into a hard-hitting socio-political satire that toes the line between horrifying and hilarious with a natural ease. There's a crescendo near the end of this that had me physically biting my fist and leaning closer and closer over in my chair I damn near couldn't take it. I already loved Ike Barinholtz going into this but I'm still so impressed with this, he and Haddish have terrific chemistry and the whole cast is a knockout (Billy Magnussen holy shit). Rather than being a cringy "both sides" white man rant as we may (not so unreasonably) expect (*cough* 𝘓𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘚𝘩𝘰𝘵), it's instead mainly convinced with being incredibly loud and incredibly mean to these people without really declaring one viewpoint the ultimate winner or the ultimate loser in a way which perfectly emulates today's political landscape. Attacks habits and opinions that until this the genre had left untapped. Luckily for me my comfort genre is assholes jostling each other so this was like candy. One of the best political comedies I've seen in eons. Couldn't have picked many better films than this to watch while Trump was finally getting voted out.

The Electric Kingdom is a novel that takes another look at the beauty of humans in a post apocalyptic world. Eighteen years after a deadly Fly Flu sweeps the globe, killing most of the population, Nico and her dog, Harry get sent on a voyage by Nico’s father to find a mythical portal. Along the way, she meets other children, including a young artist named Kit. There’s also the Deliverer, who lives Life after Life in an attempt to put the world back together. This story is an exploration of art, love, life, and finding beauty.

Every character that David Arnold writes in this book is so full of love, warmth, and heartbreak. I fell in love with Kit and his outlook on live. It was beautiful. The relationship he had with his mother Dakota, and why he calls her “My Dakota” made me tear up.

I’m not sure I completely understand the whole dynamics of the world that is in this book, but I still very much enjoyed it! There are so many layers and plot twists and double backs, you don’t realize how intense it is until you’re half way through it. By then, Arnold has you hooked and you’ve got to find out what happens and how it’s all connected!

I haven’t read anything from Arnold before but I enjoyed this one and will seeking out others from him.

Alice in Wonderland meets Bonnie and Clyde in this dark, twisted, disturbing tale of two victims who come together to exact revenge on their abusers. <br/>I've only read A Thousand Boy Kisses by Tillie - it was a bit sweet for me, so I didn't bother looking up any other books she might have written, which was a HUGE mistake! I accidentally stumbled across Sick Fux thanks to a fellow Bookworm through a group on Facebook; she said it was dark and disturbing, but good, so I thought I'd give it a try. I was not disappointed.<br/>From beginning to end, Heathen-turned-Rabbit and Ellis-turned-Dolly had me enthralled. Their adventures, their suffering, their madness... All of it drew me in, further and further down the rabbit hole (lame pun totally intended). With each murder, this question became increasingly urgent: what is going to happen to the two of them? I couldn't help but wonder if they'd succeed in their mission; if Rabbit would accidentally kill Dolly during one of their intense, raw, animalistic episodes; if they would get caught and thrown into an asylum; if they would die in each other's arms amidst gunfire from police. The ending eluded me and made me nervous, because pretty much either one would suit the twisted theme. As terrifying as it is, I found myself cheering the both of them on, grinning madly when they came out of a situation alive, despite being covered in blood. Sick Fux was definitely different and I definitely loved it!
