It’s fucking nuts!!! (0 more)
It’s a hot mess of an album (0 more)
After deciding to embrace my inner hippy and introduce myself to new musical experiences I had started with Frank Zappa and the natural progression was Captain Beefheart.

After doing extensive research as to where to start, I was intrigued to read about Trout Mask Replica, especially when it was classed on several sites as unlistenable.

I like a challenge so I bought it. I have to say that it’s the weirdest album I’ve EVER listened to! Captain Beefy does a lot of bellowing and, to be honest, I found it hard to distinguish one song for the other. However! I don’t know if it’s cos I’m on the autistic spectrum and generally like weird things, but... I liked it! I think the key to enjoying it is not to overthink it while listening, just do with it. I concentrated more on the beat of the music (if you can call it that?????!!!) than the lyrics.

Normally I hate jazz but I did enjoy it. I think I’d have to listen to it more times to feel comfortable with it. I would say, if you’re a bit nervous of investing in this, listen to the whole album before you purchase - it’s not for everyone, you may decide it’s just a cacophonous mess

"I remember hearing a PJ Harvey song, it might have been ‘Down by The Water’, and thinking ‘this is wicked, I’m gonna buy some of her music!’ At that age I had pocket money, about five pounds, so I went to this music shop in Exeter, found the PJ Harvey section, and all they had was this cheap cassette of 4-Track Demos. I was learning the drums around that time, and listening to the drums in a way I’d never done before, getting obsessive about it. I bought this PJ Harvey record, I put it on and thought ‘OK, the drums are gonna come in soon!’, but of course they never come in, it’s all demos. It was insanely disappointing! But I’d payed the money for this record, so I listened to it, and it became this educational thing for me of understanding that this was part of writing a song. Comparing the demos to the finished tracks, it was an interesting thing to hear and I think the most important thing I’d take from it is investing in something that deprives you of the one thing you were really excited about. It’s a good lesson, but completely unplanned, an interesting exercise to realise that the thing I feel is the most important thing, is not."

Lauren Carr is one talented writer. She brings you along to find out who the killer is. One thing I love about her mysteries is that you never know who the murderer is? The Hunt (2020)
The Hunt (2020)
2020 | Action, Horror, Thriller
The new film “The Hunt” has arrived after being delayed due to world events and controversy over the films content and themes.

The film involves a group of people who wake up gagged in a field and soon find themselves being hunted by a group of unknown individuals.
After a bloody and brutal initial encounter; the remaining individuals head out into the surrounding area and soon becomes a situation with far more questions than answers.

One of the Hunted is Crystal (Betty Gilpin) deduces that things are much more complex then they seem and things take a turn in a new direction.

At this point in the film I was thinking that it was lacking any real tension or suspense as the characters were not overly developed and it made investing in their outcome difficult. The film then changes direction and looks at events of the past and also explains more about the Hunters and their motivations which is somewhat unexpected.

The film is a very difficult one to review as people will expect it to be an Action/Suspense film based on the trailers. That is really just a small part of the story which is actually closer to a Dark Comedy with heavy political overtones.
Those overtones are likely to be very controversial and may put people off from seeing the film. During my post-screening comments I said that I am going to need some time to wrap my head around this film as to if I liked it or not. It is easy to dismiss it as propaganda but it is an interesting hybrid that regardless of where you stand; does make you think.

“Mailbox Money Mindset is a frame of mind, a mentality, and a lifestyle in which you focus on investing in assets, over the long term, provide recurring revenue streams”

Chris Hotze shares in his book the advice he received from his father along with practical real-world applications you can become financially independent. He also helps you understand that strictly relying on the stock market investments, 401Ks and bank accounts in your retirement may not protect you in a way you would want them too. He shows you how to protect your money and have control over it by establishing revenue streams from real-estate assets. The most profound advice I found from his dad was “Paper dollars will become less valuable over time and hard assets will ultimately appreciate.” The QR codes at the end of each chapter allow you to further investigate topics you want more information about for example of This Economic Downtown.

You would be surprised to learn that this book even with its business concept is written in a way that anyone can read and learn from these concepts. Chris Hotze writes in a way that regardless of your education you can receive useful and correct information for you to start your own Mailbox Money. He breaks down what assets really are and what tangible assets are and how their use can mean in 10, 20 or even 30 years later and how they will affect your own legacy after you are gone. I would really recommend you take the time to read this book even if you believe real-estate is not for you because the concepts and ideas inside will help you understand your financial future can look like outside of real-estate.

Friend Request (2016)
Friend Request (2016)
2016 | Horror, International, Mystery
Social media has come to play a vital role in our lives. Whether it is Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat or any other service, we cannot seem to escape the hashtags or trending topics. Social media has us feeling more and more connected with each day that passes. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for all who have access to the internet.

In Friend Request audiences are introduced to Laura, a popular college student, who befriends a lonely girl, Marina, when a friend request comes through her social media feed. She recognizes something unique about the young girl and feels the need to at least reach a hand out to her. This move proves to be a mistake as Marina becomes very clingy and eventually prompts Laura to push her away and back to her lonely existence. Laura and her friends are quickly thrown into a world where they are haunted and pursued by demonic beings.

The film is ambitious in trying to be more layered than a film with the similar premise of having the internet play an important role in terrorizing the characters. Sadly, the Friend Request becomes to complex. There are several aspects of the story that are inconsistent and raise eyebrows as it makes one question where the story is going. It disappoints in not investing enough time in making the audience actually fear the demon that Marina eventually becomes. The opportunity for a building of tension, paranoia, and claustrophobia is completely missed because of a lack of depth with the characters and a running tally on screen to demonstrate how Laura is continuously losing friends due to the meddling of Marina’s spirit hacking her interfering with her Facebook account.

Friend Request misses the mark in trying to be a truly inventive horror film as it finds itself without an identity.

Vast open world (3 more)
Nice mechanic of watching fuel level
Good melee combat

Not many 'missions' (2 more)

Not the most compelling story
Mad To The Max
You start the game, dealing with Scrotus and his forces. This is mostly cinematic but gets you ready for the game. You wake up after being thrown from Scrotus' wagon. Chum-bucket, a slightly unhinged mechanic and side kick helps you. Early on you learn thr iconic Ford Interceptor from the films has been broken into scrap. You seek to rid the land of Scrotus' influence.

The gameplay is really interesting, allowing you to customise the car to how you like. What ever your preference of car design you will find this available. To get main missions you have to lower the 'Threat Level' of Scrotus' forces. This is done by clearing outposts, minefields and destroying Markers (Scarecrows).

As you do more upgrades for weapons and car parts become available. The story lacks as it is purely about taking down the bad guys and does not give much investment. However it is really fun, driving round taking down the bad guys.

The weapons are fun, and once you unlock the Thunderpoon, tougher enemies are beaten easy.

If you like driving games, Mad Max and games where progression of the game is purely on the player than this is for you.

However if you are interested in games with much more weight to the story or compelling missions. Then you will not enjoy this as much.

Personally I love the gameplay and way the game progresses. It is the sort of game that while being open world you can invest a small amount of time in and get loads done.

Fun and fairly quick game
I've had Dungeon Lords for a few months now. I managed to play a quick, trial game with a friend when I first got it, and it was entertaining.

It then went back in the cupboard.

At the weekend, I managed to convince my wife to give it a try - eventually, she relented. She doesnt like playing a game where at least one player doesnt KNOW the rules.

The first game, we stumbled through, easy enough, but some "creativity" with the rules (as found) meant it wasnt exactly as per the rulebook. She enjoyed it enough to ask to play it again.

Last night, we played it again. And, having muddled through the first game it was a totally different game. It was entertaining, it was creative, the rules felt like they flowed much better. With two players (and 2 "NPCs") it's a challenge but probably not infinitely replayable. Next challenge will be to use the full rules - the rules are set up as "combat examples", "basic play", then "normal play" with a bit more variation and a bit tougher.

There are lots of nice nods to other classic dungeon crawl genres and games, and the boards are clear enough for easy play.

There are LOTS of tokens and cards, so I would recommend investing in some sort of in-box storage system - I spent about £2 on the one i use, which I think is supposed to be for screws and nails!

It's a really fun game, and I am now looking at the expansion for a near-future purchase!

Inspirational
If I'm being honest, I didn't expect to like this film. Everyone in the past twelve years since its release that has recommended it to me can only talk about how sad and downright heartbreaking it can be at times. Why would I want watch a film like that? After sitting through The Pursuit of Happyness, I have my answer.

Chris Gardner (Will Smith) is just trying to make money and take care of his family. After investing his entire life savings in a company that goes nowhere, he decides to risk it all and go out for an unpaid internship with a stockbroking company. The message here is extremely powerful, a message he delivers to his son about halfway through the film: If you want something, go get it. And, in the process of getting it, don't let anyone tell you that you can't have it.

The film revolves Gardner's struggle to work for no pay and still manage to take care of his son. You can't help but admire his hustle. Despite numerous shortcomings and failed attempts, he continues to push toward his vision. It's inspiration at its finest. And, just as people warned me, it's also heartbreaking to watch. I mean, the guy can't seem to catch a break. Ever. He takes a step forward then eight back. I appreciated the film being delivered in this fashion because of how real it felt. I never got the sense of sugarcoating. This man was broken, yet he found a way to piece himself back together.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention Jaden Smith's performance as Chris jr. He carries the innocence and sadness of a kid that's a victim of a situation he doesn't seem to fully understand. While it's heartbreaking to see them struggle, it's heartwarming to watch them struggle together.

My one complaint would be the movie ending a bit too abruptly for my taste. Other than that, what a great film! I give it a 92.

The Heroes
First of all I’d like to say that although this is a great read for any fantasy fan, the importance and virtues of this book are enforced greatly by having read Abercrombie’s trilogy; The First Law. That’s not to say it could not be read on its own, the story is dramatic, rich, honest and satisfying. Characters are interesting, morally grey (an Abercrombie staple) and fundamentally human in their relatability.
The story centres on a battle between the empirical Union, or otherwise the seat of power from the south of the continent, and the brutish Northmen united under a legendary fighter, Black Dow. Dow has (presumably) killed, and seized power from the previous lord of war, Logen Ninefingers (also known as The Bloody Nine) and declared the north independent.
In the south, the Union (under guidance and governance from external parties) raises it’s army to march north and deal with this threat, with the two armies set to collide at an old northern monument of stone pillars, known as The Heroes.
Now, for a reader with a severe completion complex, this book is just a warm hug. Leading on from the trilogy that left just enough unanswered to make you need more, this book if anything over-delivers on detail and lends some of its best moments from characters you just didn’t realise you wanted to know more about, or passed you by entirely.
The very best state of mind to go into with this read, is to remember that both story and moral lines are perennially blurred. Every character belongs to one side or the other in theory, but with their own agenda entirely.
Abercrombie, to me, really stands out when it comes to fighting sequences, and there’s no shortage in this offering. He uses point of view accounts from multiple characters, chaining them as they fall or impact the flow of battle, making for a visceral and investing read.
Ultimately, fans of the series or Abercrombie’s works will already have enough to know they want to read this, but if you’re thinking of picking this as a starting point, your bookshelf will be sponsored by Abercrombie before you even know what is happening – Rob.
