Slated by Teri Terry has been on my to read list for ages, so when I found out I was going to be moving from the UK to the US, I bought it ASAP because it isn't out over here in the US yet. I'm so glad I bought this book. It is so so so good!!

Kyla is a 16 year old girl whose memories have been erased in order to be a more compliant citizen. In other words, Kyla has been slated because she supposedly broke the law. Kyla can't remember anything about her previous life although she is having terrible nightmares that seem too real to just be a dream. Plus, she keeps drawing things that she can't remember ever seeing. Soon, people start disappearing around Kyla for no reason at all. Are they being Slated or is there something else going on?

The title of this book is very straight forward. Slating is the main point of this book. I wouldn't have picked a different title as I feel this one is perfect.

The cover is a bit too plain and boring. It's just kind of meh. Anyone who has read my reviews in the past knows how I don't like covers that just have a face on them. To me, it is an easy way out. It doesn't take much thought when it comes to putting a face on a cover. I wish the cover would show a bit more of the story.

The world building was great! The world in which Kyla lived felt very believable. In fact, the whole storyline felt believable. I especially thought the scenes in which Kyla is in the hospital felt like I was living them as well.

I felt that the author really nailed the pacing. I was hooked from the very first page. Everything just flowed so easily, and I felt myself become totally lost in the pages as the story progressed. It only took me longer to read Slated because I moved from the UK to the US so I didn't have much time to read, otherwise, I'd have had that book read in about 3 days or less.

The dialogue in Slated feels natural. This is a YA book, and the dialogue fits the genre perfectly. Not once does the dialogue feel forced or sound like it was adults speaking. I really enjoyed the internal conflict when it came to Kyla. As for swearing, I don't think there is any in this book.

All the characters in Slated were believable. Kyla really seemed to come across as a character who had lost their memory. At first, I was a bit concerned because Kyla seemed to know what things were even though she had lost all of her memory including motor skills. However, this was explained in the book. Kyla seems very much like a teenage girl. We don't really get to know too much about Amy or Jazz, but even they felt like real characters. For some reason, I couldn't connect to Ben. This wasn't because he was a poorly written character, but it was more of a personal thing. I just found him a tad bit annoying for some reason that I can't explain. My favourite character was Kyla's mum. I just loved the way she interacted with Kyla. Both Kyla's mum and dad are both hiding something that hasn't been revealed in this first book.

Everything about this book was fantastic. I can't think of one single thing wrong with it. It was so much fun to read. I'm only disappointed that I have to wait so long for the second book in the series to be out.

I'd recommend this book to everyone aged 14+ due to violence.

Two people, thrown together by coincidence develop a bond that goes much deeper than blood. Sarah and Greg experience loss, injury and much more as they come to realise that, when all is said and done, love is really all they needed from the start.

I thoroughly enjoyed this new offering from Font and found it to be a delightful little romance that was easy to read, yet full of twists and turns as Greg and Sarah tried to work out their feelings for each other. The plot itself does, at first glance, seem somewhat familiar - girl meets boy, two different worlds, and all that usual jazz - but this is Font we're talking about, and you can feel from the first few chapters that there is going to be something more in this story. In true style, Font throws in adversity and drama from the off, never overdoing the 'woe is me' that Sarah could play on, but keeping a perfect balance between angst and romance.

Characterisation is something that I am always on the look out for, and Font, as usual, delivers a super cast who you engage with and find quite easy to relate to. Sarah is as stubborn as a mule, but it works more as an endearing feature than a character flaw. You root for her, you want her life to come good, you want her to find that happiness you know she deserves. Greg is an enigma at first, and he never really sheds that persona until much later in the story, but again, it is an endearing part of his character, rather than a flaw. The supporting ensemble of Lily, Trimble, Matilda and Simon are equally enjoyable to read, helping at key points to be a stable feature for Sarah and Greg during times of need.

If there was one thing I could quibble over it would be, and I'm being super nit-picky here, the pace. Personally, I found the pace to be a little slow in places, but note the 'in places' - at other times, it was splendid and pulled you right into the story so that you had to keep reading. Once you reach 50%, the book is near impossible to put down, but I guess I just wanted that momentum there from a little earlier on rather than taking that extra bit of time. Like I said, nit-picky, but that's me!

Something I felt was done exceedingly well in this book was the emotion, be it Sarah's sadness, confusion, love or Greg's anger, worry or determination - it was all there and it was all believable from start to finish. I got exasperated when both Sarah and Greg were being daft and not noticing the signs, I cried for most of the last 10% (no spoilers in my reviews, but seriously, get yourself some tissues at 89%!) and I gasped in shock as plot twists hit me out of nowhere (you'd think I'd be used to this after reading Font's other works, but she totally got me again). It was written with excellent skill and balance, and I have to give praise where it's due, because Font did a fantastic job of making the emotions pour out of the page and straight into your heart.

And so, the end of another review. To conclude, it was a very enjoyable read and one I'll be recommending to friends and family ahead of that poolside reading time we call summer holidays. Characters, emotion, plot - all the key elements were there and it was, as always, a very well written story from start to finish. Well done Lorenz Font, you've written another super story that will no doubt be one I shall return to read one day in the future.

"One of the first jobs I ever had was working as a caddy on a golf course, and I worked just long enough so I could buy Lodger by David Bowie. The second job I had was cutting lawns, and I remember it was one of those hot summer days, I was sweating and getting attacked by wasps, and I was just thinking 'This is all worthwhile, because when I'm done here I'm going to ride my bike and go and buy the cut out vinyl of Suicide'. Cut outs were like the discount version. To be honest with you, I don't really even remember why I was fixated on buying the first Suicide album. Part of it was the cover, and the guy who ran my local record store, his name was Johnny, he was this alcohol and drug-addicted crazy person, and you'd walk in and he'd be playing all these random records, from Nick Drake to the Grateful Dead to The Clash to Miles Davis, and one day he was playing Suicide. It sounded like nothing I'd ever heard before. I think I was about 14. It wasn't until many years later that I met anyone who liked Suicide. I don't know if you experienced this as well, but when I was growing up albums were these almost, not to sound too grad studenty, totemic things that you would take into your house. Nowadays if I hear a song and it doesn't immediately resonate with me I probably won't spend any time on it. Some of the early records that I bought, like Public Image's Second Edition or Suicide, I'd made the effort to bring these into my house. I only had nine or 10 albums in my possession, so if I didn't understand a record back then I would think it was my fault. I'd think that the people making the record were smarter and more sophisticated than I was, and the fact that I didn't understand it was indicative of my own shortcomings. It was the middle of the summer, and I didn't really have a lot of friends, I didn't have a lot going on. My mum would go to work in the day and I was pretty much left alone to read books and watch TV. I had a lot of free time to listen to records. I took the Suicide album home and it didn't make sense to me, but I spent day after day and week after week listening to it until I cracked the code and it started to make sense. The first song is 'Ghostrider', and I still remember that Saul on the road to Damascus moment when I was listening to it for the third or fourth time, and there's that recurring line ""America America is killing its youth"", and I'd never heard anyone say anything like that before. And to say it in such a throwaway, casual way, it wasn't delivered in a portentous way, it's a throwaway lyric in a song, and that was the moment that really resonated. At the same time I was taking guitar lessons, and my teacher loved very complicated well-produced modern jazz fusion and heavy metal with long guitar solos, and he'd force me to listen to Van Halen or Larry Carlton and then when I listened to Suicide I was first confused - am I allowed to like something that clearly my music teacher hates? And finally I admitted to myself I don't like these well-produced records, I like these strange sounds. I think it also really corrupted my musical DNA."
