Marked by Blood ( The Marked book 2 )

An accursed child of earth and fire, bathed in blood on the darkest of nights…

The supernatural society lives by two laws.
Don’t tell humans about their existence.
Don’t mix the races.

Rule number one is easy enough to follow, but rule number two...well, it’s a lot harder than it seems for someone like Emelia. Her mother being caster and her father, a dragon shifter, makes her the exact thing that the Council has outlawed against. Persecuted and hunted for what she is, she has no choice but to go on the run.
Now with the help of her shifter mate, Xander, Emelia is searching for the only person that can help her in her greatest time of need. But she soon learns that the help she sought really isn’t the help she needs and that her hopes and dreams don’t matter when fate has other plans.
With peace slipping through her grasp, will Emelia be able to thrive in the chaos, or will she succumb to its darkness?

This was definitely a very good second book! I got a little bored of her constantly reminding us that xan was her mate and her dragon! But it was a good read and suddenly got very hot and heavy! Emelia definitely has got more dangerous and more kickass! Recommended to all reverse harem fans!

Variant Lost ( The Evelyn Maynard Trilogy book 1)
By Kaydence Snow

Once read a review will be written via Smashbomb and link posted in comments

When Evelyn Maynard receives a scholarship to the exclusive Bradford Hills Institute, she’s determined to make a fresh start. The Institute is world renowned for educating and training Variants – the 18% of the population fortunate enough to have superhuman abilities. As a human, she’s lucky to be admitted.

She’s done with fake identities, running and lying but once again she finds herself surrounded by secrets.

Some she’s been keeping her whole life.

Some have been kept from her.

Some she finds herself dragged into…

Ethan, Josh, Tyler and Alec have some of the rarest Variant abilities Evelyn has ever seen. They fascinate, intrigue and attract her, but is it their abilities, their own secrets or something more that Evelyn can’t seem to stay away from? The secrets they keep could drag Evelyn so deep into their dangerous and exciting world that she’ll never be the same.

And the answers she finds could get them all killed.

I could not put this book down! It’s 4am in the morning and I needed to finish it! Been a while since a book has gripped and kept me completely enthralled. I love the whole idea of the book I think the characters are brilliant! Also an author not scared to kill of characters you’ve come to like so much! Really good start to a new year and a new book challenge!

I got this from the Kindle Unlimited Library after having it on my Amazon wish list for several years after finishing book 1. I'll admit now that I've forgotten a lot of what happened with it being so long ago (2016.)

It starts with Drew trying to get himself under control after being dumped by Trent in an effort to stop any abuse they may face in the future for being gay, especially since Trent is nursing some bruises and cracked ribs after being jumped by four members of his own fraternity. They argue for a while before it becomes obvious that they're stronger and better together and figure out how to tell everyone that they're a couple.

I think the fact that it's been 4 years since i finished the first book ruined this one for me. I didn't remember a lot of what went on but my 4.5 star rating tells me I fell in love with these two. They are pretty great separately but together? They're super cute.

As for their parents, what is up with them? They are your children! You're supposed to love them regardless of their sexuality. Why does who they fall in love with have to change how you feel about them? I really don't get it. They're still the same person you raised for the last however many years.

This is most likely to be my last book of 2020 and I'm glad it's been a good one - I still wish I'd come back to this sooner.

I've put this book ON HOLD.

My Kindle Unlimited membership runs out in a few days and I've been struggling to get into this, which is strange considering I read the fifth book not long ago and love these characters.

I'll try again in a few months, start from the beginning again and see if I can get into it then (I really hope so!)

14th April

So, I'm trying again--not from the beginning--and hopefully after a few other good urban fantasy stories, I can get into this...

And I did, sort of.

2.5 stars.

I think this book has way too much going on. We skip a lot of little extra bits that would have been explained fully in earlier books, but just get a short paragraph that paraphrases into the basic facts.

The rest of the series has been long, and let it be known I'm not a fan of books longer than 350 pages, but this one seemed to go on forever. It seemed to take an age for 1% to pass and considering we get bombarded by stuff happening, I expected it to go quicker but in my opinion it went slower.

I lost interest in parts and skipped paragraphs just wanting the major fights to play out so when that had ended at about 88% (I think) and the story carried on...well, I started to lose interest once again. The main thing I was waiting for in those last few chapters was Drio to pull his finger out and tell Leo how he felt.

This has been borrowed from the Kindle Unlimited Library.

This starts with Lexi and some of the crew heading up a mountain in the hopes of recruiting a strong rock/stone giant to their crew as they gear up to appear at the Magical Summit in a few months time where Kieran will hope to become the recognised Demigod of San Francisco. Kieran doesn't know where she's heading and they're all hoping to get the giant on side before he realises. Then a ghost who used to be a spirit walker gives Alexis details of someone else who'd be good for the team and they head out after him, too. There's also the issue of Lydia, a Demigod of Egypt, who has invited them to her territory after being caught sneaking around their property. Kieran is hoping for an alliance with her so they go.

I do still really love this group of people. They are one big extended family that look after each other and compliment each others abilities magically. The new additions are great characters and I quickly grew to like both of them. I loved watching them all kick arse in this at the end. I was willing them on and grinning like an idiot at times.

There was a little twist/surprise at the end revolving around Magnus, Lexi's dad, that has me intrigued to see what might go down in the last book at the magical summit, so I'm off to go borrow it from the KU Library.

A Romance Reader's Reviews

This has been borrowed from the Kindle Unlimited Library.

Firstly I'll admit that it's been a while since I read the first three books in this series - and I believed that it was only going to be a trilogy, for some reason, so I had forgotten some of the details of this book but things were rehashed a little.

With Alexis and her small group now known by all the other Demigods in the world, they are thrown into a steep learning curve of dealing with politics and trying to learn how to use her powers for other things. There's also the fact that a Hades Demigod is trying to get their hands on Alexis, any means necessary.

A lot happened in this and, as mentioned above, I hadn't retained a lot of information about this series, so I was a little overwhelmed by all the characters. I quickly picked up who the Six were and Daisy and Mordecai.

I did enjoy this and should hopefully now remember enough for future books - book 5 is coming soon! - so I'm looking forward to reading them and seeing the results of that last chapter. I can see it's not going to go well and this group of amazing guys may end up fighting for their lives. Again.

This review is rather lacking but I have no way of saying more without giving away important plot points and that's just not fair.

Dauntless ( Nevermore trilogy book 3)

"My name is Mara, and I want desperately to become a mother."

All of my dreams were dashed when the world was promised hope but instead became a place of danger, death . . . and monsters.

When we arrived at the compound, we believed we had found our safe haven at last. For the briefest of moments, their medicine and science lulled us into a false sense of security. But within the bowels of this haven, where the cure for Nevermore is being developed, there lurks an evil which is far worse than anything we've already encountered.

Sebastian is used as a test subject, a process that instead of curing him, is slowly killing him. As his heart falters, mine must draw upon new strength if I am to fight our way out of the compound.

If we can escape, the journey will still not be over. I will have to protect Sebastian, a vial with a possible cure and our final secret.

But before safety, that vial must first make it out intact even with the knowledge that it may very well kill Sebastian, before saving the others.

This has been an amazing journey with one kick ass female character! The drug that ripped her world apart helped save her husband and her babies. I really enjoyed this trilogy and think Shannon Mayer is a very talented writer!

Fae: The Wild Hunt ( The Riven Wyrde saga book 1)
By Graham Austin-King

Sometimes the faerie tales are a warning. Sometimes they are true.

The Fae were banished so long ago they have become a myth, but the ancient barriers are failing. They are returning, and vengeance is within their grasp.

Klöss wants nothing more than to pass the trials and join the ranks of the Bjornmen raiders, following in the footsteps of his forefathers. But times are changing in the Barren Isles. Coastal plunder is making way for outright conquest, and the threat of war is looming.

Found abandoned in the forest, Devin leads a simple life. But fate, it seems, has other plans.
As his sleepy village transforms in the face of foreign invaders, whispered rumours tell of creatures in the moonlight, shadowy figures with eyes of amber flame. The Fae were banished so long ago they have become a myth, but the ancient barriers are failing. They are returning, and vengeance is within their grasp.

As the first battles rage, only one man seems to know the truth about the Fae, but can Devin or Klöss convince anyone before it is too late?
It was ok a lot of character and world building with action towards the end. Some interesting characters I did get a little bit bored in some parts but I can see what is trying to be achieved so worth sticking with at the moment.

Expectant Moon is the first book in the Gladstone Shifters series and it takes you to a current world where things are changing. Here we find Evan, a Delta, and Ben, an Alpha. Their two lives are separate at the start but once they meet, fireworks explode!

I found the beginning of this book to be slightly discombobulated, simply because we shift from one time to another, with different characters being introduced each time. HOWEVER, stick with it because each of those characters and situations is incredibly important to the overall story arc.

Once this story progressed, I was completely hooked. I loved this history of how times and attitudes had changed, how ways of life were forgotten and how they really needed to be remembered. Luckily for everyone, Jack is on hand to help and Evan will make sure it continues.

There was enough steam to melt my Kindle - which I loved! You really get a two-for-one deal with this book as Jack and William are magnificently interwoven with Evan and Ben - only in the literary sense! There is also pain, hate, tenderness, love, and hope.

Really, this was an amazing read that I thoroughly enjoyed. An amazing start to a new series with intricate details and new situations giving a brilliant twist to the 'standard' MM Paranormal Romance genre.

Absolutely recommended by me.

Cade ( The Society book 1)
By Mason Sabre

Once read a review will be written via Smashbomb and link posted in comments

The first heart-pounding instalment in Mason Sabre's Paranormal and Urban Fantasy, Society Series. What seems like an innocent run in the woods, might just end Cade MacDonald's life...

Cade MacDonald is a man who has always had a sense of right and wrong. He fights for justice and does not back down in the face of danger. As a member of Others, a supernatural race of powerful, fierce shifters, who do not accept or sympathise with any Humans, or any race other than their own, he now finds himself in a battle with the Other Society’s leaders as they oppose his attempt to save the life of a young half-breed.

Fighting to do the right thing, Cade is simultaneously faced with the unexpected attraction he feels for his best friend’s sister. Having grown up with Gemma, he is confused and torn at the strong pull of his wolf towards this beautiful tiger.

Willing to accept any repercussions of his rebellious actions, will he go as far as to lose the love of his life in the process?

While on the whole I did enjoy this and it was better written than most shifters books I’ve read in the past I found it lacking something. The characters felt really stiff and sometimes forced. I do think it shows promise and like I said I did enjoy it overall.
