Wow! This novel deserves all the hype it gets. It's manages to be incredibly magical in such a sci-fi world, yet still remaining relatable. The characters are beautifully rounded and strong. The one downside is, if you have very little knowledge of 80's pop culture references, you may find yourself lost in this one.

"An enormous tome of knowledge, wisdom, science, philosophy and transcendental mysticism that was said to have inspired Carl Sagan’s Cosmos. Like Walt Whitman as a science geek."

Worth the struggle
A classic of course. From an academic perspective, it is interesting to read this and look at the flaws caused by the limited knowledge at the time of writing. Without knowledge of DNA or genetics in general, there is a lot of guesswork here. But still this is a great book, and a great starting point for someone wanting to learn more about the world of evolution.
